Troisième et dernière édition elzévirienne de cet ouvrage, qui fut publié pour la première fois en 1641, par le docteur Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674). Ce dernier est célèbre pour avoir été immortalisé par Rembrandt en 1632 dans sa Leçon d'anatomie (Mauritshuis, La Haye). L'auteur, qui excellait dans les dissections post-mortem, fait ici état de plus de 200 observations cliniques dont certaines très curieuses : il livre notamment l'un des premiers témoignages sur le béribéri et décrit la valve iléo-cæcale qui porte son nom. L'ouvrage est également reconnu pour ses récits sur des créatures rapportées par les navires de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales, notamment le chimpanzé, dit "satyre indien" (bien que Tulp reconnaisse bien son origine africaine) : l'auteur en réalise un dessin, considéré comme le premier du genre, reproduit dans la gravure de la page 271 et en détail sur le frontispice. Ce dessin a été maintes fois recopié, jusqu'au XIXe siècle, notamment pour illustrer les nombreuses théories sur l'origine de l'homme. Bon exemplaire. Dos insolé, brunissures.
