Elzevir is the name of a family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" became very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles (like ourselves), who sought to obtain the tallest and freshest copies of these books. Although it appears the family was involved with the book trade as early as the 16th century, it is only known for its work in some detail beginning with Lodewijk Elzevir. The fame of the Elzevir editions rests chiefly on the works issued by the firm of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir. Their Greek and Hebrew impressions are considered inferior to those of the Aldines and the Estiennes, but their small editions in 12mo, 16mo, and 24mo, for their elegance of design, neatness, clearness, regularity of type, and beauty of paper, cannot be surpassed. Daniel Elzevir (1626-1680) published this work in his lifetime. Nicolaas Heinsius the Elder (1620 1681) was a Dutch classical scholar, poet and diplomat. He travelled all over Europe to visit the major libraries and over time collected Europe's largest private library in the field of classical literature. He is regarded as a brilliant text critic in his critical publications of Claudian, Ovid (his most important work), Vergil, Prudentius, Velleius and Valerius Flaccus. Aurelius Prudentius Clemens was a Roman Christian poet, born in the Roman province of Tarraconensis (now Northern Spain) in 348. He probably died in the Iberian Peninsula some time after 405, possibly around 413. A PRICED PRESENTATION COPY. Son of the eminent classical scholar Daniel Heinsius and book scout for the Queen of Sweden, Nicholas built this fine library of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, incunables, books on vellum and classical texts annotated in manuscript by, i.a., his father, Gronovius, Junius and J.J. Scaliger. With some 20,000 volumes, this auction catalog also functioned as "almost a universal short-title catalogue" (Sibbald) and became "one of the most frequently consulted catalogues of its kind" (Breslauer & Folter). The lots are divided into twelve subject areas, then internally arranged by size. Heinsius' nephew J.G. van Absmade (d. 1690) gave this copy to David Knibbe (1639-1701), the Leiden pastor and prolific author, who recorded the gift on the front flyleaf. Les aventures rocambolesque du personnage se déroulent entre la Hollande et principalement la France. L'auteur semble avoir lu les romans picaresques espagnols et français du XVIIe, on y reconnaît même l'influence du Don Quichotte dans le fait que le héros ne connaît l'amour et la bravoure qu'au travers de romans de chevalerie, ce qui le conduit à des situations cocasses. Au fur et à mesure que se déroule le roman, les événements s'enchevêtrent et les personnages réapparaissent, créant ainsi un fil narratif. The author seems to have read 17th-century Spanish and French picaresque novels, one even recognizes the influence of Don Quixote in the fact that the hero knows love and bravery only through chivalric romances, which leads him into comical situations. As the novel progresses, events become intertwined and characters reappear, thus creating a narrative thread.
