Der französische Offizier und Ingenieur Lazar Nicolas Marguerite Carnot (1753-1823) gilt als bedeutender Mathematiker und Festungswissenschaftler. Schon als junger Leutnant in Calais hatte er sich mit Physik und der Fortifikationslehre befasst und schrieb 1784 eine Studie über die Festungswerke Vaubans, das bald zum Standardwerk aufstieg. Nach der Revolution engagierte er sich politisch und entwickelte das Konzept der "Levée en masse". Von Napoleon wurde er zuerst zum Kriegsminister, während der hundert Tage 1815 noch zum Innenminister ernannt. Während der Raustaurationszeit lebte er in Magdeburg im preußischen Exil, wo er 1823 starb. Sein hier vorliegender, 1809 zuerst erschienener "Traité de la défense des places fortes" wurde noch von Napoleon in Auftrag gegeben und beeinflusste die Kriegsführung in Europa maßgeblich über die nächsten Jahrzehnte. - Frontdeckel fehlt, ebenso der Rücken. Alte Besitzereinträge und Bibliotheksstempel auf dem Titelblatt. Innen einzelne Seiten etwas feuchtigkeitsrandig; ansonsten ordentlich erhalten.
