Nicolas CAUSSIN trat 1609 dem Orden der Societas Jesu bei und wurde Beichtvater von König Louis XIII. Nach der Verbannung aus Paris durch Kardinal Richeliau kehrte er nach dessen Tod 1643 dorthin zurück. Anschließend verfasste er eine Reihe von moraltheologische Werke im Geiste des Rigorismus. Das Werk über die Rhetorik publizierte Caussinus erstmals im November 1617 und ist aus den Quellen der Antike heraus verfasst worden. Sein umfangreiches Literaturverzeichnis weist sowohl griechische, etwa Aristoteles, Aristides, Cassius Longinus, insgesamt 13 Autoren auf als auchlateinische wie Cicero, Rutilius Lupus insgesamt 17 Autoren.
