Also the evolutionary trends in these most primitive of the Metazoans are poorly understood. The confused state of their taxonomy and the difficulties with their identification prevent their use in ecological studies. The emphasis of interest presently seems to have shifted towards chemistry, but many of the hundreds of interesting chemicals recently described in sponges pro bably have been found in mistakenly or imprecisely identified animals. This situ ation will become worse in the next few years, when a number of experts will retire and will not be replaced by new ones, owing to the difficulties that the science of systematics is facing in most countries - as exemplified during this meeting by an informal discussion on the endangered future of European Museums. Under these circumstances, it is the responsability of present sponge taxono mists to leave a less confused state and tools such as simple fauna or computerized data bases to generations following. These tools do not exist even in one of the best studied areas, the North-Eastern Atlantic (including the Mediterranean Sea).…

Environ 1270 exemplaires ont été récoltés, appartenant à 96 espèces dont 12 sont nouvelles pour la Science, 51 nouvelles pour le golfe ibéro-marocain et 15 nouvelles pour la Méditerranée. L'analyse de la répartition verticale des peuplements révèle trois contingents d'espèces clairement différenciés : l'un formé d'éléments à affinités littorales jusqu'à 250 m, un deuxième constitué d'espèces entre 250 et 1000 m, et un troisième formé par 18 espèces caractéristiques des fonds bathyaux au-delà de 1000 m de profondeur. Aucune corrélation entre les espèces et les masses d'eau méditerranéenne ou atlantique n'a pu être mise en évidence. La mer d'Alboran montre un aspect appauvri de celui du golfe ibéro-marocain. Maurizio Pansini est chercheur auprès de la Faculté des Sciences de l'Université de Gènes (Italie). Maria-Jesus Uriz est chercheur du Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Directeur-adjoint du Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Blanes (Espagne) et responsable du Département d'Ecologia Acuatica du même Centre. Nicole Boury-Esnault est chercheur au Centre national de la Recherche scientifique et, après quinze ans passés au Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, travaille actuellement au Centre d'Océanologie de Marseille, Station marine d'Endoume, URA-41 du CNRS.
