As part of the Images of the World series, this exhibition is intended to contribute to the debate about the consequences of globalization and new aspects of the worldÆs cultural diversity. Though Christianity has implied the suppression of the original religions of colonized areas, art is now developing in an interplay between traditional, local imagery and western influence. Christian art in Africa dates back 400 years. The first black artists created biblical figures with African features only in 1950. An interesting exhibition documenting four Danish painters from the De Fire group. They showed together 7 times in Copenhagen in the 1920s, at which time they mostly lived in France. Characterized by their self-conscious, yet innocent humor and irony, these artists greatly impacted and invigorated the Modernist art movement in Denmark. Inspired by great masters such as Cezanne, they painted varied figurative, still life paintings with a cubist connotation. A wonderfully-executed catalog on a joint exhibition of two artists who, while working in different mediums, are both integrating innovative approaches to their customary work. For example, alongside her typical jewelry design, Vigeland has embarked on a number of free, sculptural experiments, and Groth has made the move from large-scale drawings to a modest format more akin to that of book illustration. In juxtaposing their works, the aim was to highlight their common basis in a perfectionism that has grown out of all their foregoing years of artistic endeavour.
