B. sprachphilosophischer Fragestellungen.…Die Forschung beschränkte sich dabei in der Regel auf wenige Texte prominenter Autoren wie Schleiermacher, Humboldt, Wilamowitz und Schadewaldt. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert neben diesem Kanon nun auch weniger bekannte Dokumente; manche Texte werden überhaupt erst wieder zugänglich gemacht. Besonders zu nennen sind Solgers früher Vorschlag, Übersetzen als wissenschaftliche Aufgabe zu etablieren, Wilbrandts Reflexionen zu Übersetzung und bürgerlicher Theaterpraxis oder Jordans Versuch, im 19. Jahrhundert noch einmal rhapsodische Unmittelbarkeit zu erzielen. Die Dokumentation ermöglicht es, die kanonischen Texte, namentlich das bislang schwer verständliche 'Travestie'-Konzept des Philologen Wilamowitz, zu kontextualisieren, die Kontinuität der Debatte bis in die Gegenwart nachvollziehbar zu machen und der Theoriegeschichte eine tragfähige Grundlage zu geben.
