Die meisten Dichtungen bestehen aus zwei Enden, die durch eine Lippe getrennt sind. Dadurch können sie an zwei Durchgängen angebracht werden. Eine Dichtung kann z. B. an der Verbindungsfläche zweier Rohre angebracht werden. Das eine Ende der Dichtung passt um das eine Rohr. Das andere Ende der Dichtung passt um das gegenüberliegende Rohr. Vulkanisierte Dichtungen weisen die gleiche Konstruktion auf, die aus zwei Enden besteht. Allerdings sind die Enden einer vulkanisierten Dichtung chemisch miteinander verbunden, um ein höheres Maß an Schutz gegen Lecks zu gewährleisten. Unter Einwirkung von Hitze, Druck und Klebstoffen verbinden sich die beiden Enden miteinander. Da sie aus vulkanisiertem Gummi hergestellt werden, bieten vulkanisierte Dichtungen mehrere Vorteile. Zunächst einmal sind sie außergewöhnlich stark und haltbar. Einigen Berichten zufolge ist vulkanisierter Gummi 10-mal stärker als herkömmlicher Naturkautschuk. Daher sind vulkanisierte Dichtungen ein äußerst wirksamer Schutz gegen Leckagen.
