These stories give a voice to the desires, longings and emotions of a marginalized section of the society' Rana Safvi For generations, domestic servants in India have been subjected to neglect, apathy and cruelty. Though they are known nowadays as the domestic 'help', 'aid' or 'staff', often merely to meet the requirements of political correctness, their condition remains unchanged for the most part as the country's privileged classes have failed to truly address the most pervasive inequalities in their households. In Lesser Lives, Nitin Sinha and Prabhat Kumar collect short fiction from the Hindi heartland that turns the gaze onto these continuing disparities. The eleven stories in the book, including Premchand's 'Maidservant', Mahadevi Varma's 'Rama', Saadat Hasan Manto's 'Blouse', Amarkant's 'Bahadur' and Shekhar Joshi's 'Dajyu', offer both timeless classics and little-known literary gems, some of which have never been published in translation before. Altogether, this thoughtful collection brings into sharp focus the sobering realities of class and inequality in Indian homes and encourages a new engagement with one of the most pressing issues of our times.…

Through a regional focus on Bihar between the 1760s and 1880s, 'Communication and Colonialism in Eastern India' reveals the shifting and contradictory nature of the colonial state's policies and discourses on communication. The volume explores the changing relationship between trade, transport and mobility in India, as evident in the trading and mercantile networks operating at various scales of the economy. Of crucial importance to this study are the ways in which knowledge about roads and routes was collected through practices of travel, tours, surveys, and map-making, all of which benefited the state in its attempts to structure a regime that would regulate 'undesirable' forms of mobility.…

The importance of domestic service as a growing area of occupation and employment in contemporary South Asia is marked by a surprising silence about it in historical scholarship. The second volume of Servants Pasts covers the colonial and postcolonial periods. It lays out the intricate relationship between domestic work and employment in light of the growth of first, new moral regimes under colonialism and second, public avenues of employment under colonial institutions such as the municipality, school and hospital. A reformed language of intimacy, conjugality and duties developed in middle-class households, which impinged on the mistress-servant relationship while a distinct grammar of racialised distancing underpinned the relationship between Europeans and Indians. These changes redefined the social and administrative relationships between state and subjects, masters/mistresses and servants, and more broadly, between colonisers and colonised. At the heart of this book is the claim to push for a domestic turn in the writing of South Asian social history. The essays explore the making of the site of the domestic at each historical conjuncture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by exploring its interaction with, and plotting its formation through laws, customs, norms and practices.…
