"A Solemn Review of the Custom of War, Showing That War is the Effect of Popular Delusion, and Proposing a Remedy" by Philo Pacificus, Tenth Edition, followed by seven numbers of "The Friend of Peace. Noah Worcester (1758-1837) was a Unitarian clergyman and important figure in the history of American pacifism. He wrote under the pseudonym of Philo Pacificus. Full leather covers are rubbed and a little worn. Black leather spine label is a little chipped, though lettering remains good. Contents show signs of age, though remain generally clean and intact. Volume remains tight and solid. A nice copy.

In December 1814, he published A Solemn Review of the Custom of War (under the pen-name Philo Pacificus), still considered one of the best pieces of anti-war literature ever committed to print, and as relevant today as then." It is prefixed with an analytic work on the custom of war, its causes and consequences, and the possible remedy. Very minor and sporadic age-toning and foxing throughout. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Untrimmed pages. Inscribed by Noah Worcester to John Comly, and dated 1818 on the first page. St. John's, Newfoundland had two fires in 1817 which were jointly named as the Great Fire of 1817. This pamphlet outlines some of the aid sent from Boston. St. John's was to experience more fires in 1819, and later in the century, in 1849 and 1892. The inscribee, John Comly (1773-1850), was a Quaker minister and school master. He married a fellow teacher at the Westtown School, Rebecca Budd, and together they ran the Pleasant Hill School on their Byberry Farm from 1804-1815. Canada, Pacifism 110504A.

Il y reste pendant 23 ans, contribuant également régulièrement à des journaux tant populaires que théologiques. En 1810, il devient pasteur à Salisbury, dans le New Hampshire, pour aider son frère malade2. Trois ans plus tard, en mai 1813, il devient rédacteur en chef du mensuel The Christian Disciple à Boston1 et déménage à Brighton, dans le Massachusetts. En décembre 1814, il publie A Solemn Review of the Custom of War, un traité pacifiste qui sera traduit dans de nombreuses langues.
