Full leather covers are rubbed and a little worn. Black leather spine label is a little chipped, though lettering remains good. Contents show signs of age, though remain generally clean and intact. Volume remains tight and solid. A nice copy.

In December 1814, he published A Solemn Review of the Custom of War (under the pen-name Philo Pacificus), still considered one of the best pieces of anti-war literature ever committed to print, and as relevant today as then." It is prefixed with an analytic work on the custom of war, its causes and consequences, and the possible remedy. This pamphlet outlines some of the aid sent from Boston. St. John's was to experience more fires in 1819, and later in the century, in 1849 and 1892. The inscribee, John Comly (1773-1850), was a Quaker minister and school master.
