Nella prima parte del libro si ripercorrono le tappe della vicenda di Pirandello spettatore di cinema, del suo lavoro di sceneggiatore e del suo rapporto con i registi, ponendo anche l'accento sugli aspetti teorici di questa attività, soprattutto su quelli riguardanti il cinema muto. La seconda parte del volume prende invece le mosse dal teatro, e soprattutto da Questa sera si recita a soggetto, l'opera che più riflette il problema della traduzione sulla scena di un testo narrato. L'Autrice studia le soluzioni che Pirandello propone, misurandosi con i maggiori registi dell'epoca e con il loro pensiero: dopo aver sperimentato nei drammi didascalie sempre più estese, negli anni Trenta lo scrittore ritorna alla novellistica ed a testi del tutto nuovi, diversi, intrisi della lezione del teatro. L'analisi condotta porta infine ad alcune conclusioni generali, che individuano nel Pirandello degli anni Venti e Trenta uno scrittore profondamente calato nel suo tempo, che da una prima fase 'umoristica', in cui cioè esiste solo la realtà soggettiva (e non più una realtà oggettiva) passa ad una interpretazione surrealistica della vita, in base alla quale la realtà non esiste più, nemmeno per il soggetto: quello della Favola, di Questa sera, dei Giganti, di Una giornata è uno scrittore in cui ormai la realtà si somma al sogno, come scriveva Breton, per dare origine ad una realtà superiore, più complessa e completa.
