Rivista / Giornale
Periodical. Condizione: Near Fine. Illustrated by David Byrne (cover); various illustrators (illustratore). (Vol. 5, No. 4). [nice clean copy with just minor wear to extremities]. A "horror vs. terror" theme issue, with a keynote article on that subject, followed by three related screenplays: ROSEMARY'S BABY (by Roman Polanski), AMERICAN PSYCHO (by Mary Harron & Guinevere Turner) and THE SIXTH SENSE (by M. Night Shyamalan), plus the usual interviews with all the screenwriters (and sidebar comments by novelist Ira Levin on ROSEMARY'S BABY). Other articles: "Writing for Digital," by Jerome Poynton; "Stanley Kauffmann: Critic on Fire," by Paul Smart; "Curtain Up, and Action! The Elusive Art of Stage-to-Film," by Al McKee. There is also a script for a short film, FIVE FEET HIGH AND RISING, by Peter Sollett. The editor's note indicates the magazine was trying out a "new look"; unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have delayed its fold-up. (This may, in fact, have been the final issue.).

[bright clean copy, slight bump at upper right corner, slight bumping/dog-earing at top of spine]. A special "comedy issue," including a keynote essay, "What's So Funny?" by Raymond Durgnat. The three feature-film screenplays printed herein (each accompanied by an interview with its screenwriter) are: BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (by Charlie Kaufman); BOWFINGER (by Steve Martin); and MIDNIGHT RUN (by George Gallo). There are also two scripts for short films, the Oscar-winning LIEBERMAN IN LOVE (by Polly Platt) and SCRIPT DOCTOR (by Adam, Jordan and Scott Fields), plus an inteview with filmmaker Robert Downey (Sr., not Jr.). On the non-comedy front, there is also a feature essay by Lee Server, "Behind the Shadows: Film Noir's Dark Roots," which "explores the political and social landscape that spawned a cynical, clandestine film style.".

Rivista / Giornale
Periodical. Condizione: Near Fine. Illustrated by various illustrators (illustratore). (Vol. 4, No. 3). [nice clean fresh copy, with just a few traces of handling wear here and there]. About half of this issue is devoted to Fuller. In addition to the screenplays for PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET and SHOCK CORRIDOR (both published for the first time), there is a keynote essay on the writer/director by J. Hoberman, excerpts from various interviews with Fuller, and, most fabulously, reproductions of pages from his war journals, which contain numerous cartoons which are just as punchy and his films, and just as vivid as he was in real life. Essential for the Fuller fan, and a terrific companion piece to his posthumously-published memoir "A Third Face." Oh, yes, there are a couple of other screenplays in the issue, too: "Slam" (credited to five writers, and which the editor claims was "a film Fuller would have enjoyed"; there is also supplementary interview material with the filmmakers and actors) and "Weeds," winner of the WGA's Student Screenplay Competition. NOISBN.

Rivista / Giornale
Periodical. Condizione: Near Fine. Illustrated by various illustrators (illustratore). (Vol. 5, No. 2). [nice clean copy, no significant wear apart from a diagonal crease at the upper right corner of the front cover]. A "theme" issue of sorts, with two of the three complete screenplays -- ELECTION (by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor) and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (by Stewart Stern) -- providing a cross-generational justification for the "Dangerous Teens" heading at the top of the front cover; additionally, the Keynote Essay, by Molly Haskell, is called "Teen Power." The third script, while not teen-themed, is "dangerous" in a different way: THE BIRDS by Evan Hunter. All scripts, as usual with this publication, are accompanied by interviews with their writers, and there are several other features of interest in this issue: an article by Donald Spoto, "Love, Dreams & Hitchcock," addressing the question of whether or not Alfred Hitchcock was a romantic; an article by Millard Kaufman about the hubbub surrounding the presentation of an honorary Oscar to Elia Kazan; a discussion of Philip Glass's film scores, by Michael Rohatyn. Rounding out the issue are two short film scripts: GOFER, by Joe Hamersky, and FISH BELLY WHITE, by Michael Burke.

Rivista / Giornale
Periodical. Condizione: Near Fine. Illustrated by various illustrators (illustratore). (Vol. 4, No. 4). [nice clean copy, virtually as new with just a tiny bit of wear along spine, faint diagonal crease at bottom corner of front cover]. Complete screenplays in this issue: THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (by Larry McMurtry and Peter Bogdanovich, including an essay by the former and an interview with the latter); LIVING OUT LOUD (by Richard LaGravenese, also interviewed); and GODS AND MONSTERS (by Bill Condon, also with interview). There are also articles on screenwriting in "pre-Code Hollywood" (by Lee Server), and on the work of production designer Tony Walton. The Keynote Essay is "Movie Prison" by Warren Leight, and there are also three short-film scripts: THE LUNCH DATE (Adam Davidson); THE SECRET CINEMA (Paul Bartel; this being the script for his original 1966 film, not the later made-for-TV remake); and JIM & WANDA (Tod Lippy).
