This represents about two thirds of the book as published, which contained 128 leaves. Hardcover / Bound in modern vellum with the armorial bookpl…ate of 'William Bliss' and blanks preceding the text amounting to the first 4 gatherings and afterwards. D1-4 are laid in and heavily worn with traces of an early inscription on the first leaf; the bound gatherings are in good to very good condition, a little staining. Overall 116 of the book's 158 wood cuts are present, none of them the double-page city views. Comparison with other examples of this book suggests that this is one of the editions published by Zoppino in Venice between 1518 and 1538 all of which survive in tiny numbers. This is an early guidebook designed for pilgrims visiting the Holy Land, with large, two-page views of Modone, Corfu, Candia, and Cairo, and views of Jerusalem and the Temple of Solomon. The book contains woodcuts of other cities in Italy and the Middle East on a common pilgrimage route to Jerusalem…from Venice, and also includes woodcuts and information about architectural historical features of the Holy Land, including information about more exotic plants and animals (like a giraffe). It also contains a variety of other information a pilgrim might need, including when to travel, whom to trust for lodging and transport in what cities, and the cost of certain modes of travel. This is a later edition of one of the oldest and most popular Italian travel books, which was first printed in 1500, and was reprinted dozens of times in a variety of cities in virtually the same format throughout the 18th century. Small 8vo. 192 pp., title with woodcut vignette, numerous woodcut illustrations, contemporary stiff vellum binding that's possibly been reused from another work onto which the textblock is stitched in (somewhat amateurishly but still very curious for binding enthusiasts). Paper uniformly age-toned and soft, with occasional chips and small tears throughout, not affecting text, but definitely a result of printing on cheap paper (as usual for these guides). Some soiling and faint stains and spotting, some woodcuts in this edition faded with routine wear and use, but an otherwise complete, genuine copy of a well-consulted travel guide.
