Isaac-Jacob Adolphe Crémieux, né le 30 avril… 1796 à Nîmes et mort le 10 février 1880 à Paris, est un avocat, un responsable de la franc-maçonnerie et un homme politique français. Il est l'auteur du décret Crémieux d'octobre 1870 qui attribue la citoyenneté française aux « israélites indigènes » d'Algérie. Il est l'ami de l'abbé Grégoire dont il fait l'éloge funèbre. Salomon Munk est un érudit du judaïsme franco-allemand du xixe siècle (Gross Glogau, le 14 mai 1803 - Paris, le 5 février 1867). Parmi ses nombreuses contributions à l'orientalisme, on lui doit en particulier l'édition, à partir des manuscrits arabes, du grand ouvre de Moïse Maïmonide, le Guide des Égarés (Moreh Nevoukim), qu'il publia en 3 volumes à partir de 1856. Cette notion recouvre en fait des disciplines très différentes, scientifiques ou artistiques, parfois les deux, qui ont pour point commun l étrangeté, réelle ou apparente, de leur objet. Les orientalistes, formant très tôt une communauté scientifique à travers l Europe, ont parfois exagéré, ou caricaturé, cette étrangeté. Ils ont aussi, dans bon nombre de cas, contribué à la réduire et redécouvert l universel derrière le particulier et le singulier. Et s il leur est arrivé de se mettre au service de la pénétration européenne, ils ont aussi contribué à une modernisation de l Empire ottoman respectueuse des traits distinctifs de celui-ci. Or l Empire ottoman a été totalement négligé par Edward Said dans sa célèbre charge contre l orientalisme. Sur un cas d école, ce colloque entend non pas réhabiliter l orientalisme en bloc mais en souligner la grande diversité et, à certains égards, l utilité pratique, méconnue chez nous depuis qu il a disparu des nomenclatures disciplinaires. Pour cela, des chercheurs et érudits, réunis autour de Sophie Basch, Nora Seni, Pierre Chuvin et Michel Espagne ont choisi, dans le cadre de ce colloque historique, de mettre en valeur la dimension européenne des études sur un Empire qui était à la fois d Europe et d ailleurs et de la fascination qu il a exercée.
