Das Rüstungsministerium Albert Speers, die Generäle der Luftwaffe und Heinrich Himmlers SS - sie alle standen hinter dem Geheimlager A 1 Lengerich mit dem Tarnnamen "Rebhuhn". Deutsche "Wirtschaftsführer" spielten mit. Hinter Stacheldraht zusammengepfercht, litten die Häftlinge aus der Sowjetunion, Polen, Frankreich, Deutschland und anderen Ländern an Mangelernährung und unter den Schlägen der SS-Schergen. Ihr Leiden und Sterben nahm sogar nach der Räumung des Neuengammer Außenlagers Ende Mätz 1945 kein Ende. Im untergehenden Nazi-Reich wurden sie auf Gewaltmärschen und Todestransporten durch Norddeutschland getrieben. Zeit seines kurzen Lebens rang er um die Lösung der sozialen Frage, die Durchsetzung der Interessen der arbeitenden Bevölkerung. Ebenso wichtig war…ihm das Streben nach einem globalen Frieden nach den Schrecken des Ersten Weltkriegs, die Solidarität mit den unterdrückten Völkern Asiens, Afrikas und Lateinamerikas. Schon als Schüler, dann als Student eckte er an. Die Mehrheit der Akademikerschicht, zu der er gehörte, suchte ihr Heil bei den Rechtsextremen oder blieb politisch desinteressiert. Bitter war 1929 Mitbegründer des Freien Sozialistischen Studentenbundes Münster und Agitator der münsterschen KPD. Schon auf dem Sprung in eine Parteikarriere - er sprach und las Russisch - wandte er sich in Königsberg vom Parteikommunismus ab und kehrte in den Schoß der katholischen Kirche zurück. Als pazifistischer Aktivist in einem linkskatholischen Netzwerk unterhielt er Verbindungen zu Ernst Thrasolt und Alfons Erb, dem späteren Begründer des Maximilian-Kolbe-Werks. Im Sommer 1933 wurde Bitter von den Nationalsozialisten verhaftet, durchlief mehrere Haftanstalten und Konzentrationslager. Ruhelose Jahre folgten seiner Freilassung, weil er unter einem faktischen Berufsverbot als Lehrer litt. Nur die katholische Kirchgemeinde Hamburgs konnte ihm etwas länger aus seiner Not helfen. Schon bald - nach der Anzettelung des Zweiten Weltkriegs- wurde auch Bitter zur 'Wehrmacht' eingezogen. 1942 fiel der Pazifist Bitter in der UdSSR in einem Krieg, den er ablehnte, für ein Regime, das er ablehnte, gegen ein Land, das er einst bewundert hatte. - Auf der Basis vieler Selbstzeugnisse Bitters wird sein tragischer Lebensweg nachgezeichnet und an ihn als eine der viel zu wenigen Persönlichkeiten erinnert, die zwar auch irren konnten, jedoch persönlich integer blieben - auch in Zeiten heftiger Verfolgung und schwerer Unterdrückung durch ein menschenfeindliches Regime. 168 pp. Deutsch.
