Embossed floral pattern in black on front board and spine. Previous owner's inscriptions on front endpapers, otherwise contents clean and secure in original publisher's binding. Some fading to cloth at r…ear board. Original owner's inscriptin: " Norborne Nelson / from / Miss Hall / Xmas 187-". Second owner's inscription: "Rosewell Randolph Page / from his / God Mother / November 1894" Both names are among the "First Families of Virginia." Earliest recipient likely Captain William Norborne Nelson (1824-1894) of Millwood, Clarke County, Virginia, who served in the 2nd Virginia Infantry. Second recipient Rosewell Randolph Page (1884-1951), also of Millwood, Clarke County, Virginia. The "god mother" who presented the book to Rosewell R. Page is possibly Mary Atkinson Page Nelson (1827-1899), wife of Captain William Norborne Nelson. The interconnections of the Page - Nelson - Randolph families is extensive. An interesting association copy of this classic Dickens work.
