Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good+. First Edition. First edition, first printing, first only of two volumes. Association copy signed by Lavinia Norcross Dickinson and inscribed to the Boston lawyer Benjamin Kimball, 'with the gratitude of "Emilys" sister Lavinia.' [4], xii, 228 pp. Bound in publisher's green buckram stamped in gilt with Ind…ian pipe vignette to front board, wove endpapers, inserted frontispiece. Very Good+ with moderate rubbing to extremities and toning to spine. Contents toned with light foxing to first and last few pages, 1-3/4 inch tear to contents page at lower gutter, offsetting to pp. 222-223 from newspaper clipping laid in. Emily Dickinson famously published few poems during her lifetime. When her sister Lavinia discovered hundreds in a locked box after Emily's death, she approached Mabel Loomis Todd, a friend of the family and wife of an Amherst professor, to ask for help editing and publishing the poems. The first book was published in 1890 to great acclaim and went through multiple printings. Lavinia was incensed when her sister-in-law Susan Dickinson sent several poems in her possession to a newspaper, seeing herself as the sole inheritor of all Emily's poetry. She asked Todd to seek advice on preventing further "unauthorized" publication from the Boston lawyer Benjamin Kimball. Kimball was obliging, but Lavinia calmed down before he and Todd had done more than exchange opening letters. Lavinia chose Benjamin Kimball because Emily had known him. He was the executor of the estate of his kinsman Judge Otis Lord, Emily's close friend and possible lover ("While others go to Church," she wrote, "I go to mine, for are you not my Church, and have we not a Hymn that no one knows but us?"). Kimball and Dickinson corresponded after Lord's death, and Emily sent the young lawyer several grateful letters and the poem "Though the great Waters sleep": Though the great Waters sleep, That they are still the Deep, We cannot doubt- No vacillating God Ignited this Abode To put it out- When Lavinia and Mabel published Emily's letters in 1894, Lavinia gave Benjamin this copy, of which only the inscribed volume remains. It is a memento of the association between two people who were important to the poet. The poem in Kimball's possession would not be published in any of the seven volumes issued between 1890 and 1945, but it is now well known, and has recently been adapted into a hymn by the composer Isaac Lovedahl.
