Of course, this idea piggybacked on the immense popularity of the story by Helen Bannerman which had been illustrated by John R. Neill and others in what Langston Hughes called the "pickaninny" style. The noteheads and vignettes in these pieces all display the stereotype. Lyon, who also released flash cards and staves in this series, was a musician, composer, and children's book illustrator who spent her entire life in Coos Bay, Oregon. She illustrated Ida Turney'sPaul Bunyan: The Work Giant,among others. She lost a finger and thumb in a car accident, but continued composing and performing in her seaside studio, overcoming her disability.
