Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Chronicle Books, Published 2003. Paperback, 144 pp; 23 cm; illustrated with 88 black-and-white photographs. In Very Good condition. Glossy black-and-white pictorial paper covers with French flaps show light bumping to edges and mild shelf wear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. In 1949 photographer Don Normark walked into the hills above downtown Los Angeles and found Chavez Ravine, a poor but close-knit Mexican-American village in Elysian Park. He stayed and photographed the community for a year, shortly before its residents were evicted and their homes razed to make way for Dodger Stadium. Fifty years later Normark tracked down the surviving residents, the Desterrados, and recorded their memories alongside his photographs. The result is both a social and cultural history of Mexican Los Angeles and a portrait of a lost neighborhood, with 88 black-and-white photographs. Normark's Chavez Ravine work was exhibited in 1950 alongside that of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, and Wright Morris.
