Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About the Book :- In writing this book, undertaken at the suggestion of many friends, the author has tried to steer a middle course between those accounts of Nepal inevitably cursory and incomplete, that are to be found in ordinary works of travel whose author's have paid merely brief visits to that little known country, and the more elaborate and exhaustive works written by those who from their close connection, official or non-official, with the country, can claim to be actual experts on the subject. This book is written during the time of the British Raj. This book is an Englishman's perspective of the Gurkhas as a people, offering fascinating insights into their customs, beliefs, way of life and the services they rendered as part of a British military outfit. Long unavailable, The Land of the Gurkhas has been republished to bring significant books of colonial India back into circulation. Descriptions of society, customs and traditions bring to life a long lost Nepal. The book is the product of extensive study of a first-hand experience of the colonial perspective. It contains good illustrations and photographs to make it more interesting. The book contains a chapter by Brigadier General C. G. Bruce. About the Author :- William Brook Northey was born in 1884 in England. He was a British officer of the Gurkha regiment, in which he served for twenty years. He trained the Nepal Escort in Kathmandu, served with the Nepalese Contingent on the Indian Frontier during the Great War and held the post of Recruiting Officer for five years, during which he was permitted by Chandra Shumshere to visit the interiors of Nepal that were out of bounds to other Europeans. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About the Book:-In the present work the authors have attempted to give a picture of the country as a whole, and a description of the manners and customs of the various races inhabiting Nepal at the present time, a country very different to that of Brian Hodgson's time, for the advances made even in the last thirty years are greater than during its whole history. Considering that the Indian Government has had intimate relations with Nepal for more than a century and a quarter, it is astonishing how little that country is known, even in India. The writers have met civilians and soldiers in different parts of India who have no conception of its conditions, and who knew, in fact, very little more than that the kingdom of Nepal, as it now is, occupies a stretch of the Himalayas ; and that in the Nepal Terai, the belt of forest at the foot of the hills, great shooting parties were sometimes given to Royalty, or other distinguished visitors. Besides giving a full account of what this intensely interesting country is like, the authors have provided full details of its government and of the life of its people. The illustrations, with the exception of one or two of the interior of Nepal, which were kindly supplied by the Darbar, are all from photographs taken on the spot. The book is planned in its structure, having 6 parts and 2 appendices. The book is profusely illustrated and given a map. It was originally published in 1928. About the Author:-William Brook Northey was born in 1884. He has 11 works in 57 publications in 1 language and 425 library holdings to his credit. He is the author of books such as-The land of the Gurkhas or the Himalaya Kingdom of Nepal; The Gurkhas their manners, customs and country and Landmarks in Indian anthropology.
