"First visit of a foreigner to missionary establishments in Upper California". "French navigator Jean-Francois Galaup de LaPérouse had distinguished himself during the war with England between 1778 and 1783, serving admirably in various parts of the world, and especially on the eastern coasts of Canada and in Hudson's Bay. His ill-fated expedition to the Pacific and along the west coast of North America was intended to rival those conducted by James Cook for the English. "La Pérouse sailed from France in 1785, with the frigates Astrolabe and Boussole, to the Pacific and the west coast of America. He was to examine such parts of the region as had not been explored by Captain Cook; to seek for an interoceanic passage; to make scientific observations on the various countries, peoples, and products; to obtain reliable information about the fur trade and the extent of the Spanish settlements in California; and to promote in general the inducements for French enterprise in that quarter. The result was that LaPérousse made a valuable contribution to the history of geographical discovery, particularly with regard to the American coast and the natives of America. His labors there furnished geographers with results whereby they could check the charts of Russian, English, and Spanish navigators. The expedition visited, and accounts are given of, Easter Island, Hawaii, Macao, Formosa, the Aleutian Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Australia" (Hill). EPHEMERA : J.H. Furst Company Baltimore, Maryland, blue Book Mark. Front hinge cracked (still hold). Light water stain at bottom of frontispiece. Internally fresh, clean and crisp.
