Als großer Reformer des Balletts, hat er die allgemeinen zeitgenössischen Forderungen nach Natur und Wahrheit auch in diesem Bereich auf die Praxis übertragen. Wie auch in der Dichtung und der Malerei sollte der Tanz die Natur schöpferisch ab- und nachbilden, wohingegen er Masken, Perücken, Reifröcke, überladene Schritte und unnatürliche Bewegungen ablehnte. Noverres theoretische Forderungen nach dem tänzerischen Gesamtwerk setzen sich bis in unsere Zeit fort. - "Lessing übersetzte wahrscheinlich die ersten 96 Seiten" (Seifert 1751), die von Bode beendet wurden. - Derra De Moroda 1960; RISM II, 623.

Außerdem sind noch ergänzend ein Brief Noverres an den Abbé de Voisin und 2 Briefe Voltaires hinzugefügt. Die berühmten "Lettres" von 1760 liegen in revidierter und stark erweiterter Ausgabe vor. Weiterhin fügte Noverre dieser Edition seine in der Zwischenzeit gewonnenen Erfahrungen über choreologische Detailfragen, Probleme zur Ausbildung von Tänzern und Ballettmeistern hinzu. Auch historische Aspekte der Tanzkunst werden erörtert. Die hier veröffentlichten 10 seiner Ballettszenarien hielt Noverre für besonders gelungen. - Derra de Moroda 1964.

Sehr seltene Erstausgabe, die rasch vergriffen war. - Von keinem anderen Buch über die Tanzkunst lässt sich behaupten, dass es Ballet…tgeschichte gemacht hat. Kurz vor Erscheinen war Noverre von Lyon aus von Herzog Karl Eugen als Ballettmeister an den Württembergischen Hof nach Stuttgart berufen. In seinen "Lettres" hat Noverre "die Idee des Ballet d action in brillanter Weise erklärt" (Friderica Derra de Moroda, Österr. Musikzeitschrift 1976, S. 143), er kann jedoch nach neueren Forschungen nicht länger als dessen Erfinder genannt werden. Vielmehr beruht dieses Ballett auf einer historischen Entwicklung, die bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurückreicht und alle Künste einbezog: die Tendenz "retour à la nature". So verlangt Noverre vom Tänzer, er "solle nicht nur mit Technik brillieren, . vor allem natürlich sein, . sein Gefühl ausdrücken, . seine Rolle erleben, die Natur verkörpern" (deMoroda) - Ideen, die bereits 1668 bei Michel de Pures "Idées des spectacles . " nachzulesen sind. Dennoch machte die Wirkung der "Lettres" ihren Verfasser über Nacht zu einem der wichtigsten Ballett-Reformer des Theaters seiner Zeit, während seine Ideen im 19. Jahrhundert wieder an Bedeutung verloren. In neuerer Zeit haben Isadora Duncan und R. v. Laban wieder das tänzerische Gesamt-Kunstwerk aufleben lassen. Nach O. Bie sind die "Lettres" nicht bloss die wirksamste, sondern auch die beste und kultivierteste aller Schriften über Tanz geblieben. . Seltene Neuausgabe der französischen Originalfassung; nur 8 Exemplare in europäischen Bibliotheken (RISM II, 6…23). - Am Beginn die Widmung an den Minister Amelot sowie das 'Avertissement', in dem Noverre auf die revolutionierende Wirkung der ersten Auflage seiner 'Lettres' eingeht und seine künstlerischen Positionen zusammenfasst: die Oper sei "endlich ihrer Kindheit entstiegen", man müsse "die schwarzen Perücken verbrennen und die Masken zerstören", Leidenschaft und Ausdruck, Aktivität und Bewegung seien im Tanz nötig. - Gegenüber der Erstausgabe sind nur kleine Korrekturen angebracht worden. Ein geplantes 'Wörterbuch über Tanz' ist offenbar nie zustande gekommen. Das Portrait ist der späteren Ausgabe 1807 entnommen. - Derra De Moroda 1968.
