Mit Respekt vor der "enormen Fleißarbeit" des Autors sieht er über die wenigen Schwachstellen und Lücken hinweg, möchte mit seinen Anmerkungen die "Gesamtleistung des Aut…ors nicht schmälern". In Systematik und Begrifflichkeit werde nicht ausreichend eingeführt, bemängelt der Rezensent, einzelne Personengruppen werden zu stark (Mediziner), andere zu wenig (Geisteswissenschaftler) berücksichtigt, Querverweise fehlen. Nichts desto trotz liefere Klee eine "erschreckendes Gesamtbild", gelingt es ihm doch mit den 4300 Kurzbiografien manch unliebsame These zu bekräftigen. So wird bald offensichtlich, dass der "mörderische Antisemitismus" seinen Ursprung nicht in erster Linie innerhalb der "benachteiligten Volksschichten" habe, wie Jasper erörtert, sondern in der "Mitte der Gesellschaft". Frankfurter Rundschau Einiges werde hier endlich "zurechtgerückt", "ergänzt" und richtiggestellt, lobt Rudolf Walther. Das Projekt von Ernst Klee, ein Personenlexikon mit 4.300 Kurzbiografien zum Dritten Reich zu erstellen, sei also bis auf kleine, verzeihbare Mängel vorzüglich gelungen. Bei Stichprobenvergleichen mit dem Herder-Lexikon von 1937 und verschiedenen Brockhaus-Ausgaben stellten sich im Vergleich zu Klees Arbeit erstaunliche Lücken heraus: so werde in den anderen Lexika zum Beispiel bei manchen Wissenschaftlern deren "braune" Forschungsarbeit vor 1945 komplett ausgeklammert (Paul Althaus), oder Kriegsverberbrechen überhaupt nicht erwähnt (Theodor Oberländer). Der entscheidende Vorteil von Klees Herangehensweise läge also vor allem in der Zeitspanne, die er genauestens beachte: die Karrieren werden laut Walther sowohl während als auch nach der Nazi-Zeit verfolgt. Außerdem lobt er den übersichtlichen Aufbau, das ausführliche Register und die ausführlichen Quellenangaben. Zudem sei es auch noch "unübertroffen vollständig" resümiert Walther angetan. Sein Urteil: "Von außerordentlichem Nutzen"!»Das Lexikon enthält mitsamt einem ausführlichen Anhang eine Menge aufschlussreicher Details über mörderische Täter und Institutionen und nennt auch einzelne Widerstandskämpfer und Mitglieder der Bekennenden Kirche. Eingefügte Zitate verraten die unter Nazis übliche, barbarische, mitleidlose Sprache. Klees Lexikon ist ein aufregendes Buch, gut für etliche Entdeckungen und Überraschungen, und wird sicher bald ein unverzichtbares Nachschlagewerk sein für alle, die sich näher mit Deutschlands dunkler Vergangenheit befassen wollen. Stellenweise bietet es darüber hinaus eine bewegende und beklemmende Lektüre.« Das Parlament »Ein Personenlexikon, das darüber informiert, welches Mitglied der deutschen Elite welche Funktion bekleidete in der Zeit vor 1933, von 1933 bis 1945 und danach, ist seit langem überfällig. Nun hat der renommierte Sachbuchautor Ernst Klee [], der bereits mehrere bahnbrechende Studien zum Verhalten der deutschen Elite unter dem Nationalsozialismus vorgelegt hat, die Summe seiner Forschungsarbeit herausgebracht [] Stichprobenvergleiche mit anderen Lexika und einschlägigen Monografien betätigen nicht nur die Zuverlässigkeit von Klees Werk, sondern vor allem auch seine unübertroffene Vollständigkeit.« Frankfurter Rundschau, Ernst Klee, bekannt geworden mit bahnbrechenden Studien zur Euthanasie, dem Behindertenmord im Dritten Reich, hat ein Werk vorgelegt, zu dem die etablierte Geschichtswissenschaft bisher nicht in der Lage war: Kurzbiografien zu 4300(!) führenden Persönlichkeiten im Nationalsozialismus. Angegeben wird jeweils die Funktion, der Dienstgrad (incl. SS-Karriere), die wichtigsten Tätigkeitsbereiche sowie die Stellung des Betreffenden nach 1945. Dies schmälert den überaus hohen Nutzwert des Personenlexikons jedoch nicht, zumal jeder kurze Artikel nicht nur eine hohe Dichte an Sachinformationen enthält, sondern Klee zudem ausgesprochen lesbar schreibt. Willi Jasper ist mit Ernst Klees "Personallexikon zum Dritten Reich" im großen und ganzen zufrieden. Mit Respekt vor der "enormen Fleißarbeit" des Autors sieht er über die wenigen Schwachstellen und Lücken hinweg, möchte mit seinen Anmerkungen die "Gesamtleistung des Autors nicht schmälern". In Systematik und Begrifflichkeit werde nicht ausreichend eingeführt, bemängelt der Rezensent, einzelne Personengruppen werden zu stark (Mediziner), andere zu wenig (Geisteswissenschaftler) berücksichtigt, Querverweise fehlen. Nichts desto trotz liefere Klee eine "erschreckendes Gesamtbild", gelingt es ihm doch mit den 4300 Kurzbiografien manch unliebsame These zu bekräftigen. So wird bald offensichtlich, dass der "mörderische Antisemitismus" seinen Ursprung nicht in erster Linie innerhalb der "benachteiligten Volksschichten" habe, wie Jasper erörtert, sondern in der "Mitte der Gesellschaft". Frankfurter Rundschau Einiges werde hier endlich "zurechtgerückt", "ergänzt" und richtiggestellt, lobt Rudolf Walther. Das Projekt von Ernst Klee, ein Personenlexikon mit 4.300 Kurzbiografien zum Dritten Reich zu erstellen, sei also bis auf kleine, verzeihbare Mängel vorzüglich gelungen. Bei Stichprobenvergleichen mit dem Herder-Lexikon von 1937 und verschiedenen Brockhaus-Ausgaben stellten sich im Vergleich zu Klees Arbeit erstaunliche Lücken heraus: so werde in den anderen Lexika zum Beispiel bei manchen Wissenschaftlern deren "braune" Forschungsarbeit vor 1945 komplett ausgeklammert (Paul Althaus), oder Kriegsverberbrechen überhaupt nicht erwähnt (Theodor Oberländer). Der entscheidende Vorteil von Klees Herangehensweise läge also vor allem in der Zeitspanne, die er genauestens beachte: die Karrieren werden laut Walther sowohl während als auch nach der Nazi-Zeit verfolgt. Außerdem lobt er den übersichtlichen Aufbau, das ausführliche Register und die ausführlichen Quellenangaben. Zudem sei es auch noch "unübertroffen vollständig" resümiert Walther angetan. Sein Urteil: "Von außerordentlichem Nutzen"!»Das Lexikon enthält mitsamt einem ausführlichen Anhang eine Menge aufschlussreicher Details über mörderische Täter und Institutionen und nennt auch einzelne Widerstandskämpfer und Mitglieder der Bekennenden Kirche. Eingefügte Zitate verraten die unter Nazis übliche, barbarische, mitleidlose Sprache. Klees Lexikon ist ein aufregendes Buch, gut für etliche Entdeckungen und Überraschungen, und wird sicher bald ein unverzichtbares Nachschlagewerk sein für alle, die sich näher mit Deutschlands dunkler Vergangenheit befassen wollen. Stellenweise bietet es darüber hinaus eine bewegende und beklemmende Lektüre.« Das Parlament »Ein Personenlexikon, das darüber informiert, welches Mitglied der deutschen Elite welche Funktion bekleidete in der Zeit vor 1933, von 1933 bis 1945 und danach, ist seit langem überfällig.
