Bayley trained in graphic design at Saint Martin's College of Art and completed her postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art in London. Her 1974/75 degree show featured a standout painting of three tigers taking afternoon tea; this caught the eye of legendary publisher Tom Maschler (Jonathan Cape) and led directly to the publication of her debut book ? Nicola Bayley's Book of Nursery Rhymes ? in 1975.
