Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. [From the library of noted scholar Richard A. Macksey.] Hardcover and dust jacket. Small tear to jacket. Good binding and cover. Minor shelf wear. Clean, unmarked pages. "Richard A. Macksey was a celebrated Johns Hopkins University professor whose affiliation with the university spanned six and a half decades. A legendary figure not only in his own fields of critical theory, comparative literature, and film studies but across all the humanities, Macksey possessed enormous intellectual capacity and a deeply insightful human nature. He was a man who read and wrote in six languages, was instrumental in launching a new era in structuralist thought in America, maintained a personal library containing a staggering collection of books and manuscripts, inspired generations of students to follow him to the thorniest heights of the human intellect, and penned or edited dozens of volumes of scholarly works, fiction, poetry, and translation." - Johns Hopkins University.

Nygren, Anders; Watson, Philip S., tr. Agape and Eros, Part 1: A Study of the Christian Idea of Love; and Part 2: The History of the Christian Idea of Love. New York Harper & Row, Publishers (Harper Torchbooks). 1969 (reprinted from the one-volume hardcover edition published by Westminster Press, which was partly retranslated from the S.P.C.K. 3 volume edition published in 1932, 1938, 1939. Thick 8vo., measuring approx 8" x 5.25." xxv, 764pp. Condition: Binding tight, albeit with rolled concave spine, text unmarked, cover foredges reinforced with clear tape, owner name inked to inside front cover. Provenance: The book's original owner, David Lightbourne, worked at the Harvard Book Store in 1969, acquired the newly published book there and then, eventually moved out to Portland, where he became something of an underground music guru/curmudgeon/druggie during the 70s/80s, while there apparently sold or traded the book to Powell's Bookstore, and I, working at Powell's from 1980-85 acquired it, adding it to my Christian spirituality library. So thanks to the "cyberspace information highway" we have the circuitous provenance of this book over the past 57 years just by having "David Lightbourne Cambridge 1969" written inside the front cover! Tributes to Lightbourne, and something of a timeline of his life, posted shortly after his death in 2010 are available by googling his name and "New Vulgate Issue 56, July 28, 2010." It is interesting to note that one of the "Victorian Mansions" in the west hills of Portland, mentioned in one of the tributes, where Lighbourne and half a dozen others rented, could well have been owned by Walter and Evelyn Powell who made their living this way before Walter turned his attention to Powell's Bookstore (Walter was the original owner of Powell's Bookstore/Portland, his son owned the original Powell's, in Chicago, and in the early 80s came out to run the Portland store). Location: A5.
