Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The enduring love story of Abelard and Heloise, captured in their famed series of letters from the twelfth century, has been a favorite topic for scholars since first printed in 1615. In his revelatory debut, Abelard-Heloise Correspondence, author Roland Denise Oberson sheds a new-and shock…ing-light on this beloved literary monument of Western civilization. A new literal English translation of the long letters called epistles allows Oberson to reveal a radically different account of the events that took place between these two friends and future Benedictine monks. Through painstaking study of more than fifteen years, the author translates anew and word for word the six letters directly in connection with the tragedy. The major conclusion is that their Correspondence doesn't correspond to love letters. What he discovers runs in complete opposition to the prevailing opinion that Heloise and Abelard had an illicit sexual liaison resulting in an illegitimate child. The period of their "being together under the same roof" is too short and should in no way be interpreted that they have been in the same bed. Such a hasty conclusion that "after this, therefore because of this" is much more than a logical fallacy. This hasty conclusion is a monstrosity. It reveals itself a manifest intention to harm the philosopher who mingled theology and to spare the criminal representative of the church, Fulbert. Oberson reveals that the Latin text, so often not indisputably translated, is a clandestine account of what has been particularly detrimental to the extraordinary friendship between Abelard, a monk in progress, and a pregnant orphan and very unfortunate teenager hardly fourteen years old, Heloise. It is also a study about how to sustain such a misfortune. She has been raped and made pregnant by her tutor, canon Fulbert. Her bastard, Astrolabius, is constantly and still to our days, identified as having been fathered by Abelard; an erroneous and fallacious conclusion that must be definitively dismissed. The revelation of the true cause of the tragedy, the ignominious rape of Heloise, should make a lot of noise. If nobody cares this crime, it will be one more proof of its veracity.History doesn't always like truth. The series of letters acts as a testimony to the enduring and extraordinary friendship between Abelard, in actuality a dedicated monk, and his injured friend, Heloise. Oberson's literal translation of the text demonstrates the difficulties that exist in reading and interpreting what appears a self-deprecating (Socratic) text. Care must be taken when handling it, both by translators who, betraying words, may intentionally develop a too hasty assumption. Readers also should carefully reflect upon possibly wrong presumptions even from revised transcriptions. Unfortunately, the depiction of Abelard and Heloise's relationship continues to be very specious. Superficially plausible, indeed, it is conclusively wrong. Abelard cannot be Heloise's abuser and the father of her misbegotten child. Admittedly, the Correspondence contains a few pornographic scenes that reproduce what others who would like to practice pedophilia lend them. However, as a whole, a high spirituality dominates. Anyone whose life has been touched by the epic story of Abelard and Heloise will find Oberson's debut a must read. It is a historical update to a long-beloved story, an update that will set right the many faulty interpretations that have endured for so many years. The words of these lifelong friends find a new richness and life in Oberson's literal translation, which proves to be second to none. Roland Denise Oberson's academic studies include human sciences, medicine, languages, and philosophy. Due to such an extensive and varied background, the story of Heloise and Abelard proved particularly interesting to the author. He therefore set out Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This is a genuine literal translation of Abelard's and Heloise's famous Correspondence. The English version is confronted with the first printed Latin text of 1615. Both texts are divided in 4542 items, numbered and juxtaposed for ease of reading, understanding and criticizing. This work pr…ovides proofs that the common reception of the life of those so-called lovers is incorrect and unscrupulous. With such a tool in the hands, everybody may interfere in the interpretation of one or another sentence or word. He has the capacity to indicate what part of the discourse is disputable. This kind of progressive translation is not only intended for students, but also for honest amateurs of truth in historical research. Such a Correspondence is not a love romance. It is a special way of exposing human tragedy and also and above all the description by the victims themselves of the strategy of redemption they adopt facing an unnamable infamy. In the first letter, indisputably written to his friend Heloise, Abelard summarizes his misfortunes: they are the consequences from Heloise's unfortunate condition. The following five letters show the tremendous destiny of a pair of loving people undergoing deep injustice. Heloise's prolonged complaints testify that she is an abused child. Abelard's therapeutic efforts to comfort her are developed in letters that should not be taken only as religious admonitions. They show an exemplary piety and a huge acceptance of what they prefer consider the divine will. It finally bears fruit: they will die in odor of sanctity. The essential is not given without further ado from the readers; it remains to be disclosed by cute students. It first appears to be a love tragedy, but it is indeed and above all a clandestine denunciation of a crime so much so that the Correspondence should be considered a thriller where crime and criminal-readers will soon recognize them-are almost not mentioned because the important thing is not human judgement, but the way of the Cross for two martyrs of a social organization. Explanations and proofs are presented in a successive volume of Remarks by the same author Oberson. But here is the real source and the indispensable reference book that readers need to enjoy identifying the wiles of the master in dialectics, Abelard. He is not just stoic in his behavior, he is skilled in his sarcastic and allegoric denunciation of the crime committed against his protegee, Heloise, victim of, and pregnant from an incestuous rape committed outside their connection. Astute readers will not have trouble finding that the future monk, Abelard, rightly proud of his high moral attitude (continence) cannot be the abuser of his young student. He cannot be the father of Heloise's bastard. Oberson is well aware that this key for understanding the plot should not have been immediately entrusted to obdurate and impenitent readers, but without this help, the story would anew be wrongly interpreted. Therefore an introduction is given to counteract the preconceived ideas of others who make Abelard pederast. That Abelard has loved her, 'tis true, yet essentially like a Good Samaritan his neighbor with all his heart, soul and mind. His paradoxical demonstrations of lust are just courtroom posturing. Good pupil, Heloise can also discuss scabrous situations; she knows a good bit of the affair. Let us be worthy of these masters in parody; they have no other means to absolve themselves. Good students should try to flawlessly understand their message. He will die for her, socially and physically, as the true friend. Heloise, harmful to love in being pregnant, harmful to the reputation of her rescuer, having been forced to marry him, commits social suicide at the age of sixteen to account her indefectible friendship. The book should help readers answer Philip's question to the Ethiopian Eunuch Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
