Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. Ogden Pleissner (Art work on front and back covers (illustratore). Fourth Printing [Stated}. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. viii, 344 pages. Illustrated cover. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Author inscription on the half-title page. Inscription reads To Lara Henry Baker with Best Wishes JHC Anchorage, AK 13 Aug 05. John Haile Cloe, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the military history of Alaska made him the leading expert on World War II in Alaska. Cloe was a student at the Virginia Military Institute prior to joining the Army. He served two tours in Vietnam and was later assigned to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1970 he became the Alaska Air Command historian at Elmendorf Air Force Base. His office at Elmendorf contained copious and detailed records of U.S. military actions in Alaska during World War II, when Japan bombed, invaded and occupied parts of the Aleutian Islands, as well as records of the Cold War era. In retirement, he used knowledge he'd acquired on base and information gleaned from repositories outside Alaska to produce fastidious research on the Alaska front. He led tours to Attu Island, the site of the only land battle between American forces and an invading army since the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Cloe worked with the National Park Service to preserve the history of Alaska's war years. He completed the first major history of the Battle of the Kurils, a long-running air and sea assault on northern Japan that followed the Battle of Attu. "Mission to the Kurils" was the result of nearly 30 years of research and writing, and constitutes Part II (per vi)--each work stands alone as complete. . This was the personal copy of Dr. Lara H. Baker who held leadership positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory and in the private sector. Lara earned his P.D. from New Mexico State University in 1968, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning and intellectual pursuits. He was renowned for his expertise in computers. And his work was featured on 60 Minutes. He always worked to celebrate the greatness of our country. No one was more greatly committed to the cause and purpose of this country than Dr. Lara Baker. The Aleutian Campaign occurred during the early years of the war. What was accomplished there has been obscured by time and overshadowed by the more dramatic events of other war theaters. It was the only campaign fought on North American soil during the war. It was primarily an air war where young men battled not only each other, but also the terrible, unforgiving elements of the stormed-tossed, primeval place. The war in the Aleutians has been referred to as the forgotten war, and the terror of the air battles that were fought in the lonely skies unfortunately have not summoned up the power and the glory of other theaters of conflict as so recently expressed in the movie Memphis Belle. However, those who fought there remember. -- Back cover. The Eleventh Air Force (11 AF) is a Numbered Air Force of the United States Air Force Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). It is headquartered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Established on 28 December 1941 as the Alaskan Air Force at Elmendorf Field, Alaska Territory. it was initially part of the United States Army Air Forces. It provided air defense of Alaska during World War II and fought in the Aleutian Islands Campaign. It was re-designated as the Alaskan Air Command in late 1945, and became responsible for the air defense of Alaska. Throughout the winter of 1942-1943, the Eleventh Air Force bombed Kiska and Attu whenever possible, although the flyers were extremely handicapped by the almost constant fog which covered the island. At the same time, the bases to the east of Adak were consolidated and built up. In October, the Field Headquarters of the Eleventh Air Force was closed at Kodiak and moved to Davis AAF. A Patrol Wing (PatWing) was a United States Navy aviation unit with the commander of a Patrol Wing known as the Commodore, the ComPatWing or COMPATWING. From 1 November 1942 to 30 June 1973 Patrol Wings were designated "Fleet Air Wings". Fleet Air Wing 4 was established as Patrol Wing 4 at FAB Seattle, Washington (NAS Sand Point, Washington) on 1 October 1937. On 27 May it relocated to NAS Kodiak, Alaska where on 1 November 1942 it was redesignated Fleet Air Wing 4 (FAW-4). On 15 March 1943 it relocated to NAS Adak, Alaska then on 26 April 1944 to NAF Attu, Aleutian Islands. The wing fought in the Aleutian Islands campaign alongside Eleventh Air Force. During the winter of 1943-44, the burden of operations against the Kuriles was carried by Navy Consolidated PBY Catalinas and Lockheed Ventura of Fleet Air Wing Four. They carried small bomb loads and their primary objective was the securing of nighttime reconnaissance photographs. On 17 April 1949 the wing relocated to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and became dual hatted with Commander Fleet Air (COMFAIR) Seattle with additional duty as FAW-4 in May 1949. On 15 February 1954 COMFAIR Seattle was redesignated COMFAIR Whidbey and FAW-4 (dual hatted). Fleet Air Wing 4 was disestablished on 15 March 1970.
