He has been resident on the island of Islay since 1986 and is married to Carol. They have two daughters, Isla and Heather. He was formerly a research scientist with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, from 1960 - 1986. From 1966-86, he edited their journal, Wildfowl. Until 1997, he was a member of the British Birds editorial board and was a contributor to Birds of the Western Palearctic. This book discusses six species of flamingo in detail.
