Olbracht ist Sohn des Schriftstellers Antal Stasek (1843-1931); er studierte ab 1900 in Prag und Berlin Jura, später Geschichte und Geographie, alles ohne Abschluss. Im Jahr 1905 trat er erstmals als Redakteur der sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterzeitung in Wien in Erscheinung, später dann auch in Prag für das Blatt "Právo lidu". Im Jahre 1921 trat Olbracht in die Kommunistische Partei der Tschechoslowakei ein. Er arbeitete als Journalist in der Zeitung Rudé Právo und wurde zweimal auf Grund seiner politischen Arbeit verhaftet, saß 1926 sowie 1928 (im Prager Gefängnis Pankrác) ein. 1929, nachdem er als Initiator das Manifest der Sieben unterzeichnete, wurde er aus der Partei ausgeschlossen. Olbracht verfasste neben seinen Geschichten über die Menschen in der Karpatoukraine auch Reportagen über Reisen in die Sowjetunion. Seine satirische Kurzprosa spiegelt den Niedergang der k.u.k. Monarchie und die gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse in der Tschechoslowakischen Republik. Außerdem war er als Übersetzer tätig, wie der Romane von B. Traven, Jakob Wassermann, Arnold Zweig, Lion Feuchtwanger und Thomas Mann. Das Manifest der Sieben (tschechisch: Manifest sedmi) von 1929 war ein Protest einiger namhafter linksorientierter Künstler und Mitglieder der kommunistischen Partei (KSC) in der Tschechoslowakei gegen die neue Parteilinie. Die KSC, die seit ihrer Gründung 1921 legal arbeiten konnte und zu den größten kommunistischen Parteien in Europa zählte, beschloss 1925 eine sog. Bolschewisierung durchzuführen, das heißt das Verlassen eines bis dahin relativ liberalen Kurses und die Annäherung an die Komintern. Durch die Wahl von Klement Gottwald zum Parteiführer auf dem V. Parteitag im Februar 1929 wurde die Kursänderung besiegelt. Unter anderem sollte künftig das Primat der Politik in der Kunst durchgesetzt werden (Aus Wikipedia); gut erhalten.
