Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Reprint. Published in 1922 by Dodd Mead (and in the U.K. by Cassell in the same year) this is an undated - apart from that copyright date - reprint edition from the reprint specialists, A L Burt. But these very early reprints (done within a year or two of the first edition) are so much of their time and so delightful in their close copying of the first edition that they are quite appealing. This is cheesy 1920's romance at its best! It is told "in thrilling manner" and involves an unfaithful husband and a wife who has a narrow escape from a Sheik in the desert and gets rescued by an Italian man (not her husband) she loves. Dreadful business! Wadsley's romantic slush was often made into films, the best known probably being the 1920 silent movie, The Flame. The book, appropriately clad in olive green cloth, is very good apart from the slightly browned textblock and a pencil name on endpaper. The very scarce dust jacket, with its glorious period front panel depicting that moment when the wife narrowly escapes the Sheik in the desert, is complete apart from clipped corners and is a little edgeworn and grubby - particularly on spine panel. Any novel from the 1920s with a complete and very good jacket is something of a treasure.

[From the dust jacket] When a girl with extremely modern ideas falls in love with a man who is too busy with life to indulge in futuristic theories, a situation of lively interest is bound to arise. Theodora was such a girl, pretty, healthy and full of enthusiasm for the radical - and here she was, helplessly in love with an African explorer who adored her for herself but had no patience for her precious ideas! Like any two dynamic personalities, they bounded apart as dramatically and inevitably as they had bounded together - he to Africa and she to Soho. Theodora, with a determination that becomes a little grim, pursues her Bohemian life until -- but that is the story. XX [From Russian Wikipedia] Olivia Marie Wadsley was born in 1885 in Huntington, England. She studied in Germany. In the period 1913-1931 she wrote romance novels, eight of which were serialized in the London Star newspaper, as well as numerous feature articles on topics related to human relationships, the role of women in society and fashion included in the section "The Woman?s Page". In addition to the Star, she also published in other newspapers and magazines, including Breezy Stories, The Cavalier and Argosy. Her novels included criminal intrigues and often had an unpredictable ending. At least six silent films (two American and four British) were based on her stories or novels. She was an avid motorist and theatergoer and traveler and knew many languages. She was the first woman in England to fly in the famous Zeppelin airship in Hamburg. Olivia Wadsley died in 1959 in England.
