Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 3.0, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: 10008 PS: London in Contemporary Post-Colonial Literature, language: English, abstract: This research paper deals with Monica Ali's first novel Brick Lane, an epic saga about a Bangladeshi family living in London, which explores the British immigration experience. The novel is highly disputed with its most important aspects of identity, belonging and community problems. People who actually live in the estate of Brick Lane feel being patronized by Ali's novel the more or the less. Just to show how critics reacted to Ali s masterpiece, I will give two examples briefly. Ian Jack, the editor of the Granta Magazine said: 'Monica Ali is not from Sylhet [which lies in the far north-east of the country next to the Indian state of Assam and was, until the partition of India, part of Assam and not Bengal] and nor are her novel s principal characters. Sylhettis, however, are the people her characters (though not their author) live among. I spent a week [.] in Sylhet [.]. [.] When I got back to Calcutta, I got into a shouting match with a taxi-driver about The Satanic Verses. 'But it s only a novel,' I said. 'You know, personal, made-up, invented - fiction.' 'Exactly', he said. 'Fiction. Lies.' Brick Lane is a fine first novel, but nobody should be surprised if it raises similar arguments. In a way, they are a compliment to it an to an ambitious idea of what fiction can still do.' Matthew Taylor, The Guardian, said: 'Community Leaders from the neighbourhood in the East End of London that inspired Monica Ali s Booker-nominated first novel, Brick Lane, have branded her work a 'despicable insult' to Bangladeshis living in the area. The Greater Sylhet Welfare and Development Council, which represents many of Britain s 500,000 Bangladeshis, has written an 18-page letter to the author outlining their objections to the 'shameful' way the book depicts the community. They feel the book portrays Bangladeshis in Brick Lane as backward, uneducated and unsophisticated.'2 In addition, the treatment of language and time in the book is of just the same importance. It makes Ali s novel somewhat unique and different. While Brick Lane is meant to be satirical, it can be read as a drama, for in terms of living the novel focusses on the buddhist aspect that its characters have been put on earth just to suffer. This research paper will consist of two main parts. In the first one, I will give an exact analysis and interpretation of the novel attending to the most important aspects like characterization, the structure and .…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3.0, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: 10 090 00016 HS: 'The English Novel: From the Beginnings to the 21st Century', language: English, abstract: This term paper focuses on the topic of gender and the investigation of Hardy's portrayal of women as it emerges from the novel. In order to prove my thesis, I will reflect in how far Hardy follows major trends of Victorian fiction in The Mayor of Casterbridge. Next, I will depict the Victorian ideal of women with regard to fiction and society. Finally, I will prove my claim that Hardy's ambivalent view of women, which embraces both conventional and modern ideals, is valid for The Mayor of Casterbridge, because it portrays women both as inferior and superior. Accordingly, I will show that Hardy's heroines deviate from the prevalent Victorian ideal of women. Therefore, I will analyse crucial aspects like Hardy's authorial point of view as well as Henchard's relationship to Susan, Lucetta, and Elizabeth-Jane, in the novel. My thesis matters because '[.] the appeal of Hardy as a novelist [.] has long been vital, increasingly so in recent years [.]'. Besides, '[t]he tension [.] of Hardy's representation of women [.] makes his work one of the richest and most complex sources of feminist commentary in the realist novel'. Recent criticism of Hardy focused on Marxist and feminist theories by reassessing Hardy's novels as revolutionary. This issue remains important because women have been oppressed for centuries, while Hardy's fiction contributed to the women's struggle for emancipation.…

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik, FB 10), course: Preparatory Seminar to the Shakespeare Excursion to London, language: English, abstract: This paper expatiates on the topic of jealousy and revenge as it emanates from the play. Lily B. Campbell labels Othello 'A Tragedy of Jealousy'.9 Certainly, for most recipients, Othello is about jealousy and, thus, 'shocking, even horrible'.10 Harold Bloom announces that Othello's 'name in effect becomes jealousy' (Fernie 19). Critics characterise Othello as not smoothly jealous, inherently jealous, and too eagerly beguiled 1 For so that he becomes fervently resentful (cf. Davison 13). While Davison regards jealousy as a calamitous vigour in Othello, Mason grants the mastery of maleficence.11 I will verify my thesis that the envious Iago causes Othello's jealousy which culminates in frantic reprisal. Hence, I retain that Iago's malice and fake honesty annihilate Othello's bond. To fathom the tragedy of Othello, it is indispensable to specify the cognitive theory of jealousy and envy which eventuates from psychology's interest in anthropoid liaisons, and is primordial and reiterative in literature. Tales of cruel jealousy appealed to Elizabethans on account of the notion that women are impious and that the husband's reputation is contingent on his wife's celibacy. Shakespeare's interest in jealousy stems from Elizabeth Cary's (c. 1585-1639) closet drama Mariam (1603/1613). Traditionally, jealousy supervenes in comedy and is linked to sexual possessiveness.12 The theory of humours13 defines jealousy as 'a species of envy, which is in turn a species of hatred' (Honigmann 33). Although jealousy has come to be used frequently for envy, both terms should be separated. While jealousy connotes what you own and do not fancy to be deprived of, envy is what you would like to retain but do not have. Spinoza specifies jealousy as 'the hatred towards an object loved [.] with the envy of another'.14 In 2.1., I will discuss Othello as domestic and revenge tragedy. For Stanley Wells explains that Shakespeare fosters 'the emotional response of his audiences',15 in 2.2., I will convey Othello's origin within Elizabethan theatre. In 3.1. and 3.2., I will scrutinize Iago's vice tradition and motivation. This is vital for the temptation scene which I will analyse, in 3.3. For 'the study and the stage' are 'often separate' (Matteo 1), I will include the stage. In 4., I will reflect my results.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. …
