Rédigés par un témoin direct des premières années de l'insurrection grecque, ces Mémoires comptent parmi les principales sources françaises contemporaines de la guerre d'indépendance. Officier de marine formé à Brest, Olivier Voutier (1796-1877) demeure l'un des découvreurs revendiqués de la Vénus de Milo, mise au jour lors de son escale dans l'île en 1820. Dès l'année suivante, il quitte la Marine royale pour rejoindre les insurgés grecs, répondant à l'élan philhellène qui mobilise alors de nombreux volontaires européens. Comme résumé par Leonora Navari, « Voutier went to Greece in 1821 and acted as ADC to Mavrocordatos on the Peta campaign ». Il aurait ainsi servi comme aide de camp d'Alexandros Mavrokordátos au cours de la campagne d'Épire de 1822, qui s'acheva par la défaite de Péta face aux forces ottomanes commandées par Omer Vryonis. Quelques mois plus tard, Mavrokordátos joua en revanche un rôle déterminant dans la défense victorieuse de Missolonghi. Les Mémoires de Voutier demeurent aujourd'hui encore une source fréquemment citée par les historiens du philhellénisme pour leur description de ces événements, même si plusieurs contemporains contestèrent très tôt l'importance du rôle que leur auteur s'y attribuait. Contemporary half black shagreen, sympathetically restored spine with four raised bands ruled in triple gilt fillets, aubergine paper-covered boards, gilt armorial stamp to the upper cover. Boards somewhat faded, modern bookplate pasted to the upper pastedown, occasional foxing. Written by a direct witness to the opening years of the Greek War of Independence, Voutier's Memoirs rank among the principal contemporary French accounts of the conflict. A naval officer trained at Brest, Olivier Voutier (1796-1877) is remembered as one of the claimed discoverers of the Venus de Milo, unearthed during his visit to the island in 1820. The following year he resigned his commission in the Royal French Navy to join the Greek insurgents, answering the philhellenic call that drew volunteers from across Europe. As Leonora Navari succinctly observes, "Voutier went to Greece in 1821 and acted as ADC to Mavrocordatos on the Peta campaign." He is believed to have served as aide-de-camp to Alexandros Mavrokordátos during the Epirus campaign of 1822, which culminated in the defeat at Peta against the Ottoman forces of Omer Vryonis.
