Der französische Colonel und Forschungsreisende Henri d'Ollone (1868-1945) erhielt nach seiner Afrikaexpedition den Auftrag, die Stämme und Völker entlang der Westgrenze Chinas zu erforschen. Er reiste 1906-09 über 8.000 km zu Pferd durch Regionen, die noch wenig oder gar nicht der Zentralmacht unterworfen waren, und das in einem instabilen geopolitischen Kontext. Dabei besuchte er die Völker der Miao, Lolo und Sifan. Außer der Reisebeschreibung selbst "Les derniers barbares. Chine - Tibet - Mongolie", Paris 1911, erschienen lediglich drei der geplanten 9 Bände der "Documents scientifiques", neben der Monographie "Recherches sur les Musulmans chinois" die beiden hier vorliegenden Bände der sprachwissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse. Bei Band VI handelt es sich um ein ausgeschiedenes Bibliotheksexemplar, das mehrfach gestempelt ist und am Rücken ein kleines Signaturschildchen trägt. Der Halblederband ist am Rücken etwas verblaßt und zeigt geringe Kratzspuren, insgesamt handelt es sich jedoch um ein ordentliches Exemplar des sprachwissenschaftlichen Teils der Expeditionsergebnisse.

The author of this scarce study, Henri Marie Gustave d'Ollone, better known under the name of Henri d'Ollone (1868-1945) was a French military and explorer, brother of the composer Max d'Ollone. Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, he organized and participated in expeditions throughout Africa and Asia. After several trips to Asia, he was put in charge of a scientific mission to study the non-Chinese peoples and cultures of China, and minorities coexisting within the Chinese Empire. From 1906 to 1909, Ollone, along with a team of specialists traveled about 5000 miles on horseback, in regions still little or not at all subjected to the central power, in an unstable geopolitical context. His reports on geographical, archaeological, ethnographic and linguistic matters were published in this "Recherches sur les Musulmans Chinois" (Research on Chinese Muslims). This work is profusely illustrated throughout with 91 in-text and full-page illustrated and b/w photographic reproductions, as well as a large folded map at rear. Ex library copy, with bookplate on inside of front cover, reference number and notice at rear, and stamp at upper and lower paper edges. Inner margin of title page partly taped (not affecting lettering). Pages evenly age-toned throughout. Upper corner of pages slightly bumped. Text in French.
