The cases, brought by constituents, alleged illegal and improper conduct by the sitting members in order to procure their return. The first case concerned the borough of Dungarvon, where the sitting member was accused of bribery, treating, and intimidation. The Committee found him guilty of bribery and treating and declared his election void. The second case, also from Dungarvon, alleged that the sitting member was ineligible to stand as a candidate, as he had been unseated in the previous election for bribery and treating. The Committee found that giving meat or drink to electors to influence their vote was bribery, incapacitating the offender from serving in the particular election, in keeping with long-standing parliamentary and common law precedents. This book sheds light on the history of electoral contests in the UK, particularly the legal framework and procedures for challenging the validity of elections, which still form the basis of modern election law.
