Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. First Thus. ONLY KNOWN COPY IN PARTS - from the library of William Randolph Hearst. A very good set in the 17 original parts, green and yellow printed wraps (heavy wear, soiling, chips, tears, and some repairs to wraps, wear and soiling to edges of text). This is the only known copy of the Willo…ughby edition (ca. 1849) in parts. This copy sold at auction to Hearst at the Corder Joyce et al sale at A.A.A. in 1922, and in the Hearst sale at Hammer Galleries in 1941. Housed in a red cloth slipcase and folding chemise (slipcase lacks top edge with rubbing). Illustrated with 60 plates by Thomas Onwhyn. This bestellseing potboiler, first published by Tyas in 1840, sold some 400,000 copies in its era, but remains of note because for two reasons: 1) the central role in the narrative of ventriloquism, which makes it of interest to collectors of magic and the allied arts;and 2) the author's very direct attack, in the text and the Preface, on then-scandalous use of private lunatic asylums. PROVENANCE: From the collection of William Randolph Hearst. LAID IN LOOSE are letters of provenance from Hammer Galleries and Gimbel Brothers, together with the Hammer Galleries cataloging slip.
