One of the most important Latin American magazines almost impossible to find complete, this collection of first (and second) epoch lacks 11 issues. In the number 137, of January of 1966, of tabloide change to In-4º size and it becomes a publication of 16 pages, from this delivery the director of the magazine is Salvador Azuela, director also of the publishing house. In the first stage of the publication of La Gaceta, no presentation or statement of reasons was included. Apparently it was established as a vehicle for dissemination of the activities carried out by the publishing house, as well as to publicize ongoing publications, recent editions and projects. In the first issue of La Gaceta, published in September 1954, a box appears announcing the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the publisher Fondo de Cultura Económica. La Gaceta publishes excerpts from books edited by FCE and collaborations. In #2, of October of this same year, Juan José Arreola gives a detailed chronicle of what was the celebration of the anniversary of the publishing house and the start-up of the new facilities. In this issue the director of the Fund, who at that time was Arnaldo Orfila Reynal, appears as responsible for the publication. The publication was, initially, large format but its size has varied on numerous occasions. The Gazette has always been published in two inks. The name of the publication and the heads and subheadings of the articles were presented in color, and this varied month by month. From #2, a section called "Balcony" appears, which would be prolonged throughout the first period. This space, in charge of the Editorial Office, was dedicated to publish correspondence, announcements, congratulations and all kinds of communications related to the literary world. From the second issue was included at the end of the magazine, a page that announced the editorial news. This section was practically the raison d'être of La Gaceta of the Fondo de Cultura Económica. In this first period, some bibliographic supplements announcing the publications offered by the Fund were published in a discontinuous manner. From #55, March 1959, appeared as editor of Emmanuel Carballo. The publication was still under the coordination of Orfila Reynal. The first double number was 99-100, from November-December 1962. It contains a count of La Gaceta, entitled: "The world seen from 100 Gazettes", where readers are informed about the total number of topics dealt with in each of the 100 numbers that appeared until then. In number 139, March 1966, Flores Aguilar disappears from the directory and only Salvador Azuela remains. A year later, at number 150, February 1967, Antonio Magaña Esquivel is the new editor-in-chief. As it was said, between 1954 and February 1967 the format varied on one occasion from tabloid to quarto, however, it was not identified as a change of era. The numbering was continued. In addition, until February 1967 the "Balcony" section was published and the editorial line was practically the same. In March 1968, the format is reduced to octavo at the address continues Salvador Azuela but the change of format, in this case, also meant a change of era the third epoch.
