First Edition. Poor folio copy, with all plates removed (from 40 as issued), in contemporary full gilt-decorated red leather over boards, now with scuffs and scratches. Panel edges worn; spine rubbed, particularly at the joints and endbands. Text block shaken, with some leaves coming loose. Front free endpaper lacking; the text leaves are complete. Aside from minor marginal smudges and faint offsetting from absent plates, the leaves are strong and clean on the whole. A serviceable example for its text. Physical description; 98 pages ; 35 cm. Hardcover. 4to., (14 x 11 2/8 inches). List of Subscribers. 40 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates. Contemporary half red morocco, gilt (extremities a bit scuffed). Later issue, first published between 1819. This was Orme's last great colour-plate book, after a successful career that began in 1794 when his brother Daniel published one of his engravings. By 1799 Orme had been appointed printseller in ordinary to George III and in 1820 editor of prints in ordinary to George IV. "In May 1800 he had a shop in Conduit Street, London (at the corner of George Street), and in 1801 exhibited a portrait at the Royal Academy. In the same year he established himself at 59 New Bond Street, London, at the corner of Brook Street, and published "Rudiments of Landscape", a volume of uncoloured etchings after his brother William's drawings. He advertised that he stocked 'Books of Instruction in every Branch of Drawing, and Drawing Materials'. Then began the publication of a series of coloured aquatint books, ending in 1819 with "Historic, Military, and Naval Anecdotes". Some separate engravings of London markets were issued in 1822, but in 1824 the shop was closed, and he concentrated on his new career" (John Maggs for DNB) as a property developer.
