It covers a fascinating array of objects, from engraved gems and gilded glasses to cast ivory carvings and gold rings â" all of which offer insights into the beliefs and practices of early Christians. These antiquities reveal the geographical spread of Christianity from the second century, with examples from Egypt, Syria, Italy, Britain, and North Africa. The book explores the symbolism of the period, such as the use of the fish to represent Christ and the anchor to symbolize hope. It also examines the development of Christian art, from its indirect and symbolic nature to the more realistic depictions that emerged after the conversion of Constantine. The author traces the influence of pagan mythology and Eastern religious ideas on Christian art and symbolism, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of the diverse influences that shaped early Christian thought and expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The following year Dalton joined British Museum in the department of British and medieval antiquities .Dalton's initial focus in ethnology migrated to archaeology and he set about writing catalogs on the collections.During World War I, Dalton worked for the Admiralty, in the map making division, until he was struck by and car and seriously injured.Dalton moved to a cottage in the Quantocks in 1940. He died at home, unmarried, in Holford, Somerset, in 1945. His Quantocks land was donated to the National Trust for its unspoiled beauty, the rest New College to found a research scholarship. "--Dictionary of art historians ; ".Often at such times I would hear a rushing in the highest branches, and turning very silently, see the outposts of a troop of monkeys peering down through the gleaming foliage. Then, if I moved neither head nor limb, others would come, and yet others, leaping from branch to branch and plunging down from higher to lower levels like divers cleaving a deep green sea; until at last some slightest involuntary movement of mine would put the whole host to flight, and greybeards, young warriors, camp followers and mothers with their children on their backs would go crashing from tree to tree, screaming and gibbering like the shades of Homer's sapless dead. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an introduction to the art and antiquities of the Christian East, from the 4th century to the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire. The first Christian capital of Constantinople drew its art and ideas from the wider world, which this book traces. The author explores sources as far-ranging as Armenia, Egypt, Anatolia, Greece, Italy, and Syria. We see how the artwork of this era was a dynamic meeting ground of influences, combining established Hellenistic forms with motifs from the Near East. One of the main strengths of this book is its focus on how cultural identity is expressed through objects. Chapters on sculpture, painting, mosaics, textiles, and other formats are not just surveys of technique and style. Instead, they're investigations into the way different artistic media were used to transmit complex sets of ideas. By looking at the art of the Christian East, the book illuminates themes such as identity, authority, and the evolution of iconography. This book is a rich source of fresh insights into a crucial stage in the development of Christian art. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
