Beneath them, the printed text explaining that the Slate-Roof House was the town residence of William Penn and his family during his second stay in the city, in 1700. John Penn, the American, the only member of the family born in the country, was born there, and John Adams and other members of Congress lodged there afterwards, as the text on the leaf records.
