In questo libro si propone una ricostruzione del suo processo genetico, con l'individuazione dei modelli grafici (librari e non-librari, come le scritture esposte e monumentali presenti negli affreschi, nei mosaici, nelle icone e in diversi oggetti di uso liturgico) che sono alla base delle sue forme più caratteristiche, e si descrivono le sue diverse articolazioni. Particolare attenzione è dedicata alla ricostruzione del contesto storico-culturale del IX secolo - in modo specifico la fase finale della contesa iconoclasta -, che ha permesso l'elaborazione di una determinata ideologia della scrittura, con la promozione di scelte estetiche volte all'esaltazione e al potenziamento della funzione figurale ed iconica del segno grafico.
