The photo shows a portrait of General Frederick Winthrop in uniform and in a slight 3/4 turn. Bust composition with faded vignette. No date, circa 1860s-1880s. 2 1/2" x 4." Photo is virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Cardstock backing is very clean and intact except for light age toning, faint stains, and slight wear to extremities. A Near Fine copy. This is a CDV showing a portrait of General Frederick Winthrop (1839-1865), a Union general who served during the American Civil War. He began serving in the Army of the Potomac on April 11, 1862 and fought in some of the Civil War's most famous battles. He achieved the rank of Brevet Brigadier General on April 1, 1865. That same day, he was sadly killed in the Battle of Seven Forks, one week before Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered.
