O. wurde durch die Gedichtsammlung "Sechzig Kreuz- und Trostlieder" (1856) als Lyriker bekannt. Sein "Liederbuch" (1875) enthält 400 Natur-, Liebes- und Alltagsgedichte aus den Jahren 1842-74.
