Aggiungi al carrelloBelgrade: "Avala-film", 1963. Quarto (29.5 × 20.5 cm). Original half-cloth over marbled boards; 220 leaves of typescript to rectos, with over 400 vintage gelatin silver prints attached to leaves with paperclips. Manuscript notes and sketches to versos and throughout. Boards scuffed, corners bumped; else about good or better. Unique working copy of an original shooting script for the film "Attack on Drvar" (Desant na Drvar, 1963), made by one of the most prolific Yugoslav directors of stage and screen, Fadil Had?i? (1922-2011), co-written with a leading figure of the Yugoslav neo-avant-garde, Bora ?osi? (b. 1932). The volume was likely assembled by Had?i? himself, and includes the text of the screenplay, a breakdown of 583 takes, notes on camera angles, movement of the camera and actors, as well as over 400 photographs capturing individual shots, providing a step-by-step roadmap for the shooting. The film dramatizes a major assault of the German forces on Drvar, the headquarters of Yugoslav Partisan resistance with Tito in command, carried out in May 1944. For Had?i? this was a second feature film, following his debut feature "The Alphabet of Fear" (1961). A graduate of the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts (in painting), Had?i? started out in animation, writing his first screenplay for the critically acclaimed animated film "The Enchanted Castle in Dudinci" (Za?arani dvorac u duduncima, 1952). He would go on to write and direct over a dozen films, with the "system critique" films "Protest" (1967) and "Novinar" (1979), earning him the title of Best Director at the Pula Film Festival of Yugoslavian films. In the 1980s, Had?i? would move away from film, toward writing and directing for the stage. For the writer and journalist Bora ?osi?, this was the debut screenplay. Born in Zagreb, ?osi? studied Philosophy in Belgrade, finding work in more lucrative screenwriting while translating the Russian Futurists and researching historical avant-gardes in Yugoslavia as a passion project. ?osi? also edited independent journals throughout the 1960s for which he produced experimental writing. In 1969-1970, he published the mixed media journal "Rok" which was "both an art magazine and a work of art". Art historian Mi?ko ?uvakovi? writes: "In the theoretical sense and in terms of concept, Rok was the pinnacle of the Belgrade neo-avant-garde, joining together, within the integral context of a magazine, experiments in literature, essay, poetry, painting, and music, referencing the international strategies of neo-Dada and Fluxus" (See Dubravka Djuri? and Mi?ko ?uvakovi? eds. Impossible Histories: Historical Avant-Gardes, Neo-avant-gardes, and Post-avant-gardes in Yugoslavia, 1918-1991, p. 28). The volume "Mixed Media" (1970), a kind of an artist book, became a culmination of his work on "Rok". His screenwriting work and his interest in the avant-gardes intersected in the 1973 project "Crazy dictionary" (Ludi re?nik), a satirical and absurdist TV series which used puppets.

Original string-bound decorative wrappers; 104 pp. Illustrations throughout, including numerous full-page photographs, with some printed on differently colored or patterned stock. Wrappers somewhat dust-soiled; else about very good. An influential neo-avant-garde pro-Fluxus volume of writing and photo collages by the Serbo-Croatian and Yugoslav writer, translator, and dissident Bora ?osi? (b.1932). The volume includes designs by Russian avant-garde artists such as Sonia Delaunay and Vladimir Tatlin, fragments of Bauhaus and Dada texts, documentation of works of Fluxus artists such as Dick Higgins and Emmett Williams, among others. Attached to the string binding of the volume is a kind of book mark which contains the table of contents. Starting with his translation of the Russian Futurists, ?osi? was one of the first to research historical avant-gardes in Yugoslavia, publishing the first reprints of the Dadaist magazines Dada Tank and Dada Jazz. ?osi? also edited independent journals throughout the 1960s for which he produced experimental writing. In 1969-1970 he published the mixed media journal "Rok" which was "both an art magazine and a work of art". Art historian Mi?ko ?uvakovi? writes: "In the theoretical sense and in terms of concept, Rok was the pinnacle of the Belgrade neo-avant-garde, joining together, within the integral context of a magazine, experiments in literature, essay, poetry, painting, and music, referencing the international strategies of neo-Dada and Fluxus" (See Dubravka Djuri? and Mi?ko ?uvakovi? eds. A strong opponent of Serbian nationalism, ?osi? moved to Berlin in 1992. Scarce in the trade.

Wrappers detatched from block of the first two issues. Light soil and creasing to fourth issue, with a small mark in blue ink to front wrapper. Overall about very good. Complete run of this neo-avant-garde pro-Fluxus magazine, edited by the Serbo-Croatian and Yugoslav writer, translator, and dissident Bora ?osi? (b. 1932). The first two issues, designed by Slobodan Ma?i?, include articles on Fluxus artists and re-prints of Dada works. The third issue contains a video essay and extensive discussion of ?elimir ?ilnik's film "Rani Radovi" (Early Works), which dealt with the Yugoslav Student protests of 1968, and won the Golden Bear at Berlinale in 1969. The final issue, released in the smallest print run of only 500, is designed as a kind of artist book by one of the most prominent Yugoslav neo-avant-garde artists Vujica Re?in Tuci? (1941-2009). In addition to ?osi?, the Rok editorial board included the poet and literary critic Mica Danojli?, journalist and human rights activist Mirko Klarin, artist and experimental musician Vladan Radanovi?, and the poet and editor Mirjana Stefanovi? Starting with his translation of the Russian futurists, Bora ?osi? was one of the first to research historical avant-gardes in Yugoslavia, publishing the first reprints of the Dadaist magazines "Dada Tank" and "Dada Jazz." ?osi? also edited independent magazines throughout the 1960s for which he produced experimental writing, culminating in the present issues of Rok. 28). ?osi? rose to become a prominent and award-winning literary figure through his work as a novelist, a playwright, a dialog writer for films, and a translator. He also published texts in various magazines and held readings throughout Europe. Following the collapse of Yugoslavia, ?osi?-an opponent of Serbian policies-went into voluntary exile by moving to Berlin in 1992. The designer of the first two volumes, Slobodan Ma?i? (1939-2016) gave the volumes their strong visual character. Ma?i? also designed special issues of the new left student journal "Susret" (1968), posters and publications for the famous Student Art Centre in Belgrade, collaborated with the avant-garde theatre Atelje 212 and the BITEF theatre festival. In addition to his design work, Ma?i? established Nezavisna izdanja [Independent publications], becoming a well-known independent publisher of dissident writings in the 1980s (See: Jasna Dragovi?-Soso, "Saviors of the Nation: Serbia's Intellectual Opposition and the Revival of Nationalism", 2003). Celebrated as one of the "most significant artists and publishers who shaped visual communications in Serbia and Yugoslavia over the past half century", the exhibition "Ma?i?: Retrospective Exhibition of Visual Communication" was held in Belgrade in 2018 and in Paris in 2021. As of November 2025, KVK, OCLC show only three complete runs in North America, with additional institutions holding scattered issues.
