Nicht konventionelle Nebenprodukte in der Tierfütterung, insbesondere solche, die bei der Schlachtung von Großtieren anfallen, wie z. B. Panseninhalt, werden verwendet, um die Futterkosten und folglich die Kosten für die Herstellung einer Produkteinheit wie Milch oder Fleisch zu senken und um den Proteinbedarf der Tiere zu decken. Außerdem verringert die Wiederverwertung des Pansens das Problem der Entsorgung und der Umweltverschmutzung.
