They were given to audiences with general familiarity of his beliefs and an anthroposophical knowledge of Man and the Cosmos in its spiritual essence. The lecturess were translated from original shorthand reports unrevised by Steiner. They were not originally intended for print, but published with permission of the Rudolf Steiner Nachlassverwaltung (estate) in Dornach. "As this title indicates, the chief concern of these lectures is with the life after death; that part of it after the 'Kamaloka' period, when the soul is open to cosmic influences and is prepared for its new life on earth. The lectures disclose some of those factors in a person's life on earth which will influence his experiences during this period as well as those in the spiritual world which affect his future earth-life. Steiner makes clear the great significance for spritual progress, our connection with the earth, and speaks of the influence the living may have on the souls of the dead."
