Soft cover. Condizione: Good+. In 1957, Dr. Humphrey Osmond first coined the word "psychedelic" to describe the mind-expanding drugs, then familiar to only a small minority of researchers and "acid-heads." In these remarkably few years, this term--and the drugs it refers to- have become household words. Ominous headlines have warned us of their dangers, while Madison Ave. has reveled in the delights of the psychedelic sub-culture. This book is a broad and serious inquiry into this much-discussed topic. It will enlighten and surprise the uninitiated, as well as the frequent user. It includes first-hand reports of the nature of the experience, recent scientific theories; the use of psychedelics in primitive and non- western cultures and sociology of drugs in our society.Professional book seller with storefront since 1975. In 1956, pioneering psychedelic researchers Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond were invited to join members of the Red Pheasant First Nation near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, to participate in a peyote ceremony hosted by the Native American Church of Canada. Inspired by their experience, they wrote a series of essays explaining and defending the consumption of peyote and the practice of peyotism. Hoffer's sister, journalist Fannie Kahan documented the religious ceremony and wrote a history of peyote. Their writing advocates for Indigenous legal, political, and religious rights and offers important insights into how psychedelic researchers interpreted the peyote ceremony.

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Good. Trade paperback in original pictorial wraps with bold George Giusti cover design. Cover shows moderate toning and soiling overall, with surface scuffing and creasing, particularly at upper corners and spine head. Spine intact and legible; some vertical stress creasing along spine. Pages tanned throughout as expected for paper stock of this era, with mild waviness at page edges visible in spine view. Interior clean and unmarked by previous reader. Half-title page bears rubber ownership stamp of Dr. Charles Graham, Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital, with a red penciled shelf notation "1ºB" in upper right corner ? a provenance stamp of genuine institutional and historical interest. Binding firm; text block tight. The Future of Time assembles contributions from psychiatrists, psychologists, anthropologists, and philosophers to examine the human experience of time from multiple disciplinary angles ? including how drugs, mental illness, culture, and altered states affect temporal perception. Edited by Henri Yaker, Humphry Osmond (who famously coined the term psychedelic and collaborated with Aldous Huxley), and Frances Cheek, the volume sits at the intersection of mid-century psychiatry, consciousness studies, and social psychology. This copy's provenance stamp ? Dr. Charles Graham of the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital, one of America's oldest and most historically significant psychiatric institutions (est. 1841) ? adds a meaningful layer of collecting interest: a working psychiatrist at a historic Penn institution reading Osmond's work on time, madness, and altered perception. A coherent and evocative association copy. Carefully packed and shipped in a box. Shipped via USPS with tracking provided. International shipping available. Additional photographs available upon request. SCI 1a.

Amid all the bitter controversy concerning other uses of LSD, our authors --- who are among the very first scientific investigators of LSD decades before the public heard about it; Dr. Osmond is the acknowledged coiner of the term psychedelic --- have been quietly and without fanfare pursuing their scientific researches into LSD therapy for alcoholics. Here is their first report to the public on their successes."
