Ex-library with usual library markings, DJ in plastic sleeve, DJ pasted to boards, book cocked, edges worn. Stanley Blumberg was a noted science writer who published widely on technical and policy subjects. Gwinn Owens was a writer, editorialist, and correspondent long associated with the Westinghouse Broadcasting Group. Derived from a New York Times review of The Life and Times of Edward Teller. By Stanley A. Blumberg and Gwinn Owens. If the tragedy of our age, as Ralph Lapp laments, "is that at the very time when science has reached the position where it can enormously improve man's life, its main thrust has been turned to destructive applications," then Teller's career embodies that tragedy. An exceptionally gifted physicist, Teller was turned by the exigencies of World War II from the pursuit of knowledge to its military application. The cold war transformed this temporary diversion into a permanent preoccupation. The results of his work helped to create the macabre international system we have lived with for more than two decades. Winston Churchill described its essential nature in 1955 to the House of Commons: "Then it may well be that we shall, by a process of sublime irony, have reached a stage in this story where Martin Sherwin, member of the history department at Princeton University, is the author of "A World Destroyed: The Atomic Bomb and the Grand Alliance," winner of the Stuart Bernath prize. safety will be the sturdy child of terror, and survival the twin brother of annihilation." Teller's major contribution to the arms race is a multimegaton hydrogen bomb, a weapon he pursued almost from the moment in the autumn of 1941 when he heard Enrico Fermi speculate that a fission explosion might be used to initiate a fusion reaction. He brooded about this problem during the war while working on the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, became increasingly bitter about a lack of support for it afterwards, and never forgave the H bomb's opponents, especially J. Robert Oppenheimer, for their opposition. When President Truman endorsed thermonuclear research program in January 1950, several months after the Soviet Union's unexpected first atomic bomb, Teller committed his prestige to the development of an H bomb. On May 8, 1951, the U.S. ignited the first thermonuclear reaction on earth. Teller's goal was then within reach. For his contributions to the H bomb Teller is clearly of interest to historians of technology; for his influence on national security policy during the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations he is a historical figure important to all. Teller's influence is recognized by those who lament it as well as by those who applaud it. In the judgment of the distinguished Nobel Prize winning physicist I. I. Rabi, "He's a danger to all that's important. I do really believe it would have been a better world without Teller." To Nelson Rockefeller, on the other hand, an early advocate of Teller's bomb shelter program, Teller is "an individual of energy, dedication, and genius so extraordinary as to . . . leave me eternally in his debt for the services he has rendered mankind.". Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. 1st Edition. xviii, 492, [2] p. Illustrations. Occasional footnotes. Notes. Index. No dust jacket present. Pencil erasure residue on fep. Stanley A. Blumberg, was a Baltimore author, inventor, and Middle Eastern expert who collaborated on two books about nuclear physicist Edward Teller. Mr. Blumberg produced a torrent of articles over the years that encompassed a wide variety of issues from science to economics and the affairs of Israel. Gwinn F. Owens, was a retired editor and editorial writer who made Baltimore's The Evening Sun's op-ed page a popular feature with readers and contributors. Edward Teller (Hungarian: Teller Ede; January 15, 1908 September 9, 2003) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist, known colloquially as "the father of the hydrogen bomb", even though he claimed he did not care for the title. Teller made numerous contributions to nuclear and molecular physics, spectroscopy (the Jahn Teller and Renner Teller effects), and surface physics. His extension of Fermi's theory of beta decay (in the form of the so-called Gamow Teller transitions) provided an important stepping stone in the applications of this theory. The Jahn Teller effect and the BET theory have retained their original formulation and are still mainstays in physics and chemistry. Teller also made contributions to Thomas Fermi theory, the precursor of density functional theory, a standard modern tool in the quantum mechanical treatment of complex molecules. In 1953, along with Nicholas Metropolis and Marshall Rosenbluth, Teller co-authored a paper which is a standard starting point for the applications of the Monte Carlo method to statistical mechanics. Teller emigrated to the United States in the 1930s, and was an early member of the Manhattan Project charged with developing the first atomic bombs. During this time he made a serious push to develop the first fusion-based weapons as well, but these were deferred until after World War II. After his controversial testimony in the security clearance hearing of his former Los Alamos colleague J. Robert Oppenheimer, Teller was ostracized by much of the scientific community. He continued to find support from the U.S. government and military research establishment, particularly for his advocacy for nuclear energy development, a strong nuclear arsenal, and a vigorous nuclear testing program. He was a co-founder of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and was both its director and associate director for many years. In his later years he became especially known for his advocacy of controversial technological solutions to both military and civilian problems, including a plan to excavate an artificial harbor in Alaska using thermonuclear explosives. He was a vigorous advocate of Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative. Throughout his life, Teller was known both for his scientific ability and his difficult interpersonal relations and volatile personality, and is considered one of the inspirations for the character Dr. Strangelove in the 1964 movie of the same name. Presumed First Edition, First Printing, but with no printing line on verso, it may be a book club edition.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good+. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Photographs; SIGNED EDITION. This copy has been signed by the Biographee - Edward Teller, along with a longish inscription, on the front endpaper. The book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Good dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some beginning bumping to the spine ends of the book cover, along with a slight rearward slant to the spine. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has a number of small and medium sized tears, small chips missing, and bits of wrinkling. "Born in Austria-Hungary in 1908, Teller emigrated to the US in the 1930s, one of the many so-called "Martians", a group of Hungarian scientist émigrés. He made numerous contributions to nuclear and molecular physics, spectroscopy, and surface physics. His extension of Enrico Fermi's theory of beta decay, in the form of GamowTeller transitions, provided an important stepping stone in its application, while the JahnTeller effect and BrunauerEmmettTeller (BET) theory have retained their original formulation and are mainstays in physics and chemistry. Teller analyzed his problems using basic principles of physics and often discussed with his cohorts to make headway through difficult problems. This was seen when he worked with Stanislaw Ulam to get a workable thermonuclear fusion bomb design, but later temperamentally dismissed Ulam's aid. Herbert York stated that Teller utilized Ulam's general idea of compressive heating to start the nuclear fusion to generate his own sketch of a workable "Super" bomb. Before Ulam's idea, Teller's classical Super was essentially a system for heating uncompressed liquid deuterium to the point, Teller hoped, that it would sustain thermonuclear burning. It was, in essence, a simple idea from physical principles, which Teller pursued with a ferocious tenacity, even if he was wrong and shown that it would not work. To get support from Washington for his Super weapon project, Teller proposed a thermonuclear radiation implosion experiment as the "George" shot of Operation Greenhouse." (from Wikipedia) ; Signed by Biographee.…
