London: Hatchard and Son, [1845]. First edition of both titles. Two related titles in one octavo volume (8 x 5 1/4 inches; 203 x 133 mm). [1]-95, [1, blank]; [1]-145, [1, blank] pp. No copies of either title have appeared at auction in the past sixty years. Quarter modern calf over marbled boards. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Edges speckled brown. First title-page with some glue and paper residue along inner margin, not affecting text. Final leaf of first title (pg. 95, with blank verso) with two closed tears and a one-inch by half-inch hole in the text spanning seven lines. Overall a very good copy of this scarce title. "Oxlee, John (1779?1854), philologist and writer on theology.Oxlee's minute study of the Hebrew writings led him to differ on many important points both from the Jewish and Christian interpreters.In his Three Letters to the Archbishop of Canterbury (1842) and Three More Letters (1845) he stated his reasons for declining to take any part in the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews, and his grounds for not believing in the personality of the devil.
