Tirage à part rare de la première monographie sur le carcinome hé…patocellulaire ("the first acceptable report of two cases of liver cancer"). Le terme d'adénome hépatique désignait alors des tumeurs "composées de tissu hépatique" sans préjuger de leur nature. Kelsch et Kiener opposent les "hyperplasies circonscrites simples" (latentes et de découvertes fortuites à l'autopsie) et les "adénomes vrais", dans lesquelles les cellules hépatiques "se groupent en cylindres pleins ou creux", de pronostic péjoratif. Ils rapportent deux observations et signalent l'existence d'une cirrhose associée. Ces "adénomes vrais" de Kelsch et Kiener prendront le nom d'épithéliomes à la fin du XIXe siècle, puis celui de carcinomes hépatocellulaires. Louis Félix Achille Kelsch (1841-1911) fut professeur d'épidémiologie et maladies des armées au Val-de-Grâce. Il avait une formation à la fois de clinicien et d'anatomo-pathologiste. Paul Kiener (1841-1895) fut médecin-principal des armées.
