Rare graphite artistâs sketches of Beatles legends John Lennon and Paul McCartney by American artist Pat B. Socci. Signed by John Lennon vertically with an added self-caricature and Paul McCartney on their respective portraits and additionally signed by artist P.B. Socci. Active in the mid 1970s, American artist Pat B. Socci gained a reputation for seeking out Hollywood icons to sign his sketched portraits. Pencil notation to the verso of the Lennon portrait (now obscured by the frame's backing), stating that Lennon's signature was obtained at the "Carlyle Hotel, Sgt. Pepper Premiere Night, 11-17-74." TheÂMcCartneyÂsignature was obtained in person on November 23, 1974, at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City.ÂIn fine condition. Double matted and framed. Each sketch measures 8.5 inches by 11.75 inches. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 24.5 inches. From their initial meeting in the late 1950s in Liverpool, Paul McCartney and John Lennon formed a close creative bond when McCartney joined Lennonâs band, The Quarrymen, which later evolved into The Beatles. McCartney and Lennon became each otherâs closest confidants and songwriting collaborators, complementing each otherâs talents. Lennon often provided a raw, introspective edge to their songs, while McCartney contributed catchy melodies and a more optimistic tone. As The Beatles ascended to fame in the early 1960s, McCartney and Lennon assumed principal roles as the band's primary songwriters, their collaboration reaching a zenith during the peak of Beatlemania. Their mutual encouragement and competitive spirit catalyzed innovation, yielding a repertoire replete with enduring classics within the rock 'n' roll lexicon. Following The Beatlesâ breakup in 1970, tensions arose between McCartney and Lennon. However, their friendship persisted through indirect channels and legal intermediaries, with bitterness largely fading by the mid-1970s.
